would create mere understanding for
the plight of farmers than any other
means.
If "Next Season's' Promise," left
me sad, "Letter From Wingfield
Farm," at Hurn Country Playhouse,
left my sides aching from laughter.
This show takes a gentle, and warm
took at what happens when a green ci-
ty man gives up his pin striped suit
and his job as a stock broker for a 100
acre rocky farm and a pair of bib
overalls. His notion that he can ac-
tually make a living with a single fur-
row plow and a broken-down race
by Gwyn Whilsmith horse causes his neighbours, who
have lived in the country all their
lives, to lift their eyebrows, to say the
least.
In the entitle admits that he "never
knew farming oferbd so many oppor-
tunities to make a fool of yourself."
It was a delightful show from begin-
ning to end. And it seems good to me
that the local theatres in this mainly
agricultural area have produced two
such excellent, though different, plays
about farming.
Being an old farm girl from way
back, I've always had empathy for
the tillers of the soil. It's true that far-
ming has changed dramatically since
I went to the barn to milk the cows,
when, although I hate to admit it,
farm implements were still being pro-
pelled around the fields by Per-
cherons and Clydadales. Now, when
I visit some of my country cousins I'm
almost overwhelmed by the size of the
towering tractors, and the complexi-
ty and cost of other equipment. Still,
even though farming has become Big
Business, and a far cry from what I
knew as a girl, once a farmer, always
a farmer, I say. •

Bernstein's show
now on at GB
Bernstein on Broadway celebrates
the glorious talents of Leonard Bern-
stein featuring the fabulous voice of
• Aggie Cekuta Elliot. This musical
evening highlights Bernstein's most
famous tunes including songs from
West Side Story, Candide, On the
Town and Wonderful Town. Berstein
on Broadway is featured at Playhouse
II from July 15 to July 26.
A veteran member of the Stratford
Festival's Gilbert and Sullivan com-
pany, Aggie appeared with Caralyn
Tomlin as Mabel in The Pirates of
Penzance last year. Most recently,
Aggie appeared in Toronto in Evita
and in Toronto Free Theatre's rock
and roll space musical, Plunder,
Perfect Mind at the McLaughlin
Planetarium.
Ms. Elliot is a seasoned cabaret
performer who has appeared in
several revues including her one -
woman show, "Aggie". Born in
Toronto of a Slovenian theatrical,
family, she pursued instrumental and
vocal studies at the Faculty of Music
at the University of Toronto. She is
the recipient of the 1983 and 1984
Tyrone Guthrie Award.
Huron Country Playhouse audience
will remember Aggie in the role of
Luisa in The Fantaskticks, The Music
Man and the cabaret An Evening with
Aggie. In 1981, she made her profes-
sional stage debut at Iluron Country
Playhouse with repertory productions
of the Young Company which includ-
ed Ten, Stardpst and The Incredible
Magical Delfodil.
The music of Leonard Bernstein
has delighted audiences for decades.
Known as an American conductor,
composer and pianist, Leonard Bern-
stein began piano lessons at the age
of ten and later studied at Harvard
University. He has composed music
for pallets choreographed by the
legendary .Jerome Robbins and the

as West Side Story, Candide, Peter
Pan and On the Town.

ed only five months ago and has been

tures on the subject. Too bad the
farmers couldn't have shared some of
the profits grossed by the movie in-
dustry, but they did receive some
much needed publicity.
This year, two local summer
theatres, Blyth Festival, and Huron
Country Playhouse, gave farmers
another welcome shot in the arm.
"Another Season's Promise" at Blyth
is an up-to-date portrayal of the dif-
ficulties facing some farm families in
Canada, today. A man who prides
himself on successfully farming the
family farm for over 30 years is slow-
ly but surely trapped in a labyrinth of
problems stemming from low prices
to high payments to the bank. To
avoid bankruptcy he finally sells the
farm on which his family has lived far
generations. It's not a happy play;
you leave feeling sad, but much more
sympathetic and knowledgible to the
crisis in agriculture today. It seems
to me if "Next Season's' Promise,"
could criss-cross the country playing
to urban audiences and politicians it
