Mary's Musings
come aboard to sew a tiny tear in the
top.
1 usually get the job of cleaning the
upholstery, because he says that it's
the sun tan oil that 1 smear all over
my legs that messes up the seat
covers. 13ut this year the Skipper even
took care of ,that job.
Once our ship looks ship-shape, it's
time to test the motor. There's
nothing worse than having the official
launching, and the motor won't start.
Hoses are hooked up to the motor,
water flows everywhere, and the key
is turned. After a battery boost, she
starts. The propeller turns and the
dog barks.
The life jackets and paddles are
retrieved from the attic, and the
water skis are dusted off. She's ready
for the river.
Of course all that work doesn't end
there. Every few days all summer
long, the same procedures have to be
repeated. We can't go for even a short
cruise, without the Skipper seeking
the Windex bottle or the upholstery
cleaner.
Of course, all that work isn't the
hardest part of being•a boat owner. I
think the toughest job a boat owner
faces is coming up with just the right
name for his craft.
There are some very ingenious
names on boats out there. Just cruis-
ing through Port Franks can give you
some good laughs by reading names
on boats. Often, they leave you
wondering what the story is behind
the name. Among my favourites are
"Grounds for Divorce" (do you sup-
pose they ever got back together

By Mary Alderson,
• This is the third boat we've owne '
The first two were no -names, and 1
think they resented it. The first boat
came with the house when we bought
it. We nicknamed it The Tub, because
it was large and white, and resembl-
ed an old-fashioned bath tub. We
found out what it was like to be tow-
ed home on several occasions. Our se-
cond boat was sleek, orange and
black and very fast. We talked about
calling her Tiger. But we ended up
just calling her The Baja, which was
her make. We learned that sleek, last
boats look good, but don't offer very
smooth rides in Lake Huron's rough
waters.
We decided to call our present boat
Shampoo. I thought we picked the
name because of Warren Beatty's
movie, and at the time it sounded cat-
chy. My hairdresser -husband says we
picked the name because he had to do
a lot of Shampoos to buy it. A few
years ago I was lucky enough to win
a small row boat. We named her
Cream Rinse and docked her next to
Shampoo.
Actually, the name Shampoo took
on a whole new meaning when our ac-
countant saw it on the back of our
boat. "I just hope 1.don't find a $15,000
expenditure for shampoo on your
books," he said.
