Last week I spent an hour or two browsing through a pile of moldy, dusty books in a second hand store. Although I've %%ever thoht serious- ly about starting a collection, old books hold a fascination for me, and I ended up loading over two dozen of them in the trunk of my car. Having got them dusted off and cleaned Oa bit, I'm now in the process of work- ing my way through some of them. We tape books so muc 1 for granted that it's hard to believe that the first European book was printed lcss than 600 years ago. One of the earliest ( if not the first) was a Latin Bible, printed by Johannes Guttenberg of Germany, in 1456. There are still about 40 or 50 copies of it in existence, and needless to say, any book collec- tor who owns a "Guttenberg Bible" is very fortunate indeed. Well', I didn't find any such priceless treasure, or even anything near one, but I did pick up several in- teresting old tomes, written in the last old tomes are fascfriating ontWy. Several Methodist Hymn Books were in the pile, and I brought one home, printed in 1884. How I wish it was as rare and as valuable as the "American Bay Psalm Book", which, if you own a copy, is worth around $300,000 today. None of the books I brought home by Gwyn Whilsmith "Evangeline" and "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard", which we still studied when 1 went to high school, years later, but which are seldom read today. Another book I couldn't pass up was Nellie McClung's, "The Second Chance." For "Purple Springs". When we were young parents, Childcraft Books were very popular, but too expensive for us to afford for our children. However, the other day I purchased six of them, in excellent condition, at 75t a piece. They still look like good books to me, and ( although they're too late for my instance, I paid 75 cents for an "On- tario High School Ancient History", which was selling at the same price back in 1909. Apparently, however, the cost of books went down after that because "A Reader in Canadian ehiNtrlo, Pd pass on the gam' Itds` on to m y htc There was a bit of pro.e on the cover of another old book, entitled "A Book Speaks," and it seems to me it's worth passing on to any of you who may be book lovers too: - "Between my covers you will find the heartaches, the passions, the dreams, the struggles and aspirations of mankind. I bring you laughter and tears, gaiety and wisdom. "The ancient past, the fleeting pre- sent, the marvels of the future ... all are inscribed upon my leaves.
