HomeMy WebLinkAboutTimes-Advocate, 1986-06-11, Page 8Page 8 Jure 11, 1986 SS anniversary on Sunday baptism at Tbain.s Road] MtaofTheScarBaptism took place on Sunday which was the Third Sunday After Pentecost with Rev. Robert Matheson in charge. Rev. Matheson told the children's story God Visits His People. Murray Dawson clerk of session called Mr. and Mrs. John Johns for- ward to have their son Matthew John baptised. The choir sang "Spirit of God" accompanied by the organist Miss Agnes Bray. Rev Matheson's sermon was entitl- ed "Tansformations". All three scripture lessons describe transformations. We heard of two in- dividuals being raised from death and we also heard of another person retur- ning to the presence of God. All three passages cause us to refer to baptism. Baptism recognizes God as our Maker. As creator of this world we need to allow God to have dominion over our lives.' Because of our human nature - be- ing what we are - seldom are we will- ing to allow God to rule over (over- rule?) us in our day -today living. It is our hope for children trusted to our care that they will somehow not make the same number or same type of mistakes (commit thesamesins) we have in our own lives. Baptism is a time to remember the vows made on our behalf at our own baptism and to recall, as well, the time when, through our own profes- sion of faith, we confirmed those vows on our own behalf. We recall in stories of the early development of the Church that peo- ple were baptised with the Spirit after having been baptised by water. Water baptism is our recognition of God's activities in the human dimension of life.
