RAYMOND 8 McLEAN Barristers and Solicitors Exeter, Ontario Solicitors for the Executor 23c Everywhere but church "Adult education is a growth in- dustry, it seems, everywhere but in the church," writes Contributing Editor Patricia Clark in the June cover story of the United Observer. "An invitation to Bible study arouses all the enthusiasm of an appointment with the dentist." According to an Observer survey, United Church people agree that everybody ought to study their faith, but they don't practise what they preach. Clarke reports that "fewer than four percent" of United Church people are actually involved in study. One of the results is that "many of us aren't sure what we believe, or what our church believes." Part of the problem, she notes, is the lack of funding for adult educa- tion. The United Church spends $278,000 a year for continuing educa- tion for the approximately 2,500 members of the order of ministry, but only $60,000 to4ubsidize training for the church's 891,000 lay people. "That works out to less than seven cents each," says Clarke: "You'get what you pay for." An important reason for why peo- ple don't study, writes Clarke, is fear. "We're afraid of being lectured at, of being made to feel dumb or inade- quate, of letting others in the con- gregation find out we're not as solid a Christian as we think they expect us to be:" Fear of change is also a factor. "If we began to think seriously of God's purpose for us and the world," writes Clarke, "we might catch a commit- ment, and that would upset our lives." The Self Help Centre, a first in Canada, was open- ed today by Member of Parliament for London -Middlesex Terry Clifford. Clifford, chairman of the employ- ment and youth caucus committee, has been the driving force behind the project which installs user-friendly computer terminals in malls as an alternative to employment counsell- ing centres. Through the computers. youth have access to data banks pro- viding information on jobs, training programs and school options. "The mall operation will attract young people because that's where they hang out", said Clifford. "We are taking government into the communi- ty and we are spending 5120,265 just to determine the effectiveness of these centres in helping the youth of Canada. Unemployment among youth is high. Last year roughly 600,000 of the unemployed were between the ages of 15 and 24. About 250,000 young people leave high school without graduating annually and join the ranks of the unemployed. Power use takes jump Increased demand for electricity reinforces the need for a comprehen- sive study of all available supply and demand options, Ontario Hydro Chairman Tom Campbell said today as the utility's 1985 annual report was released. Demand for electricity in Ontario in 1985 rose by 3.1 percent over 1984. "This is consistent with the 3.2 per- cent average annual increase in sales to 'Ontario consumers over the last five years and underlines the need to identify ways of meeting future elec- tricity needs," Campbell said. "Our customers will play a major role in determining what options are the most appropriate to meet future electricity needs." Campbell also pointed to a number of Hydro accomplishments outlined in the report: • a reduction in net borrowings by more than 50 percent from 1984; * the lowest debt ratio since the mid-1970s; • expansion of electrical service to more than 15,000 new rural retail customers, the largest increase in almost 10 years; • meeting a peak demand of 20.5 million kilowatts on December 18, 1985.
