Nuroii transition house
has over 75 custoniers
Thirty-five women and 43 of their
children resided for varying periods
of time at Huron County's transition
house for battered women from June
20 last year, executive director June
Taylor told the annual meeting of Sur-
vival Through Friendship House of
Huron County Inc.
The women from all . areas of the
county, were referred by Family and
Children's and Youth,'various Police
Departments throughout the county,
by friends, lawyers and doctors.
Women and their children have
received professional counselling
from Family and Children's Services,
from the Huron Centre for Children
and Youth, and some have par-
ticipated in play therapy at the
Homestead Group Home. Some were
referred to the London Access Clinic.
Five clergy and priests have met
with parishioners at the house with
some making several visits to the
same women. -
Programs provided for inhouse
clients and former clients include eqn-
sultation with a health nurse, life skill
sessions including general •low cost
meal planning and budget assistance,
baking, sewing, bread making,
quilting, garden planting and plant
care.
Clients have been guests at live
theatre, private homes for dinner and
for drives in the area on Sunday after-
noons. Children have been to live
theatre, Polka Dot Door and Mr.
Dt'ess Up, with the titketa being
don4ted'
Follow up has been on request with
most of the clients continuing to keep
in touch with the staff whenever they
feel down. They are invited to see
videos which attempt to help them
understand their problems, deal with
preventive issues and help them to
feel .better about themselves.
"Volunteers are wonderful at the
house," said Taylor. Volunteers come
from churches throughout the coun-
ty. Four sessions are conducted each
week with the volunteers who visit
with the women and enjoy doing
crafts with them.
A grolup of professional volunteers
also gives of their time freely with the
clients and their children, said
Taylor. These dedicated people in-
clude teachers, counsellors, priests,
recreational personnel and .foster
parents. "The clients have very high
praise for these volunteers," Taylor
told the meeting. -.
Staff have attended area workshops
and Seminars on subjects which in-
clude family violence, working with
volunteer boards; time management,
leadership skills, managing the
organization, liability and the
- volunteer, communication skills and
battered women.
Taylor said the staff's expectation
for Survival Through Friendship
House was to make it a home away •
from home for women in distress and
their chilrjren- not an institution. "The
staff is filling their expectation in this'
area with their daily work," said
Taylor.
Rev. Gordon Simmons, board presi-
dent, commended the staff and board
members for their dedication and
time. He expressed the support and
confidence of the board to the ex-
ecutive director June Taylor and the
house Staff who have been vilified by
angry spouses, threatened by them
and questioned by the board for their
actions. "You deserve more than we
can • give or express in the way of
gratitude, but keep the faith and
remember we are with you."
Last summer it seemed as if the
house staff and board were living
from crisis to crisis, said Rev. Sim-
mons. "We opened at a time when our
finances were appallingly low, staff
was hired with the promise of pay to
come, the larders were almost emp-
ty and yet we had a full house."
"The churches, the service clubs of
Huron County and Huron County
Council all came through," said Rev.
Simmons. "Groceries, gifts of money
and clothing poured in and we
weathered the crisis."
"If it were not for the dedication of
the house staff and their concern for
the clients, I believe we could have
closed the doors and walked away,
but such was not the case' and even-
tually, the staff was paid and we were
able to pay our outstanding bills."
In his closing remarks, Rev. Sim-
mons reminded everyone the house,
its staff and board operates through
the support of and is dependent on the
citizens of Huron County to whom
they are answerable. "All of us are
open to question and we must accept
that," he concluded.

IDEA EXCHANGE
On May 29 and 30, 250 plant
breeders will assemble at the Uglver-
sity of Guelph for a Crucifer Genetics
Workshop. Crops in the crucifer fami-
ly include the oilseed drop canola as
well as such common vegetables as
cabbage and broccoli. Most of the at-
tention of the geneticists will be
focussed on canola which is now the
leading oilseed crop in Canada and is
noted for the high quality of the oil
produced. The meal left after extrac-
ting the oil provides a high quality
protein with a variety of uses.
Canola is the modern progeny of the
lowly rapeseed crop. Over the past
two decades, Canadian plant breeders
have reduced the unacceptably high
levels of tmdesireable chemicals in
both the oil and the high protein meal
residue remaining after oil extrac-
tion. These successes have enabled
canola to supplant other vegetable
oils as the preferred commodity for
many uses.
