cruiser, but finally the OPP were

Council indorses act
to keep seniors home
At a recent meeting, Grand Bend
council were notified by cor-
respondence from David Warner,
M.P.P. that a new private members
bill would be introduced ih the near
future.
The bill will make it possible for
more seniors to remain happily in
their own homes, where they want to
be. He said that Ontario ranks third
in Canada for putting its seniors in in-
stitutions and that Canada ranks third
in the world.
The Seniors' Independence Act pro-
posed to establish community-based
programs to provide support services
for seniors from a neighbourhood
resource centre.
Medical and dental services, home -
help programs, and daily contact by
telephone or in person, are just some
of the agenda offered from this
t•esource centre. it would provide
social, recreational and exercise pro-
grams as well as meal and educa-
tional outlines.
'Council endorsed this Act en-
thusiasticly, feeling that Grand Bend
would benefit from it, having a large

Boys enjoy open fire
The GB Beaver Colony enjoyed an
evening of soccer and camp fire ac-
tivities Friday night at RR 2 GB.
Leader 'Hawkeye' Bob Lovie provid-
ed the open fire and each Beaver
cooked his own hot dogs and roasted
marshmallows. It was the perfect set-
ting, with just the ghost stories
missing!
Don't forget the day at camp Ben -
miller this Saturday, May 31. Drivers
and helpers are still needed 'for the
day. See Bob Lovie or Paula Thomas.
Anglican Church
A most successful tea and bake sale
was held at St. John's Anglican
Church on May 17. The ladies wish to
thank all those who helped to make
this day so enjoyable. The next mon-
thly meeting of the Anglican ladies
group will be held Thursday, June 5,
at 2 p.m. in the Parish Hall.
At the Church service held on May
18, the lay delegate to the synod gave
a report on the• 137th session which
was held at Althouse College on May
11-13.
The Anglican service this Sunday
was marked by the celebration of
three baptisms. They welcomed little
Crystal Dawn Wheeler, Kimberly
Jane Wheeler, and Mr. David
Graham into Christ's flock through
ba ' tism.

Herbalist Worms W.I.
The Grand Bend Women's Institute
meeting was held on Thursday in the
U.C. The topic was on horticulture
with Eva Allister hi charge.
She introduced the guest speaker,
Christin Koch, herbalist from Forest
Glen Farms, RA 5 Forest. (bnistin
spoke on the many different herbs
and their uses. Some are used for
medical purposes, while others go in
soups, stews, garnishes and herbal
teas.
Some of these plants are annuals
and the rest are perennials. Members
were able to touch and smell these
fresh ou ofts they were
around. Some
the varieties ud-
ed nasturtium, sweet violet, lemon
and rose geranium, tarragon angelica,
and sweet silly.
These plants may be used fresh for
summer or dried for winter touches.
Herb plants were for sale at the end
of the talk.
The new W.I. president Millie Des:
Jardine, opened the business meeting.
Roll call was answered by giving
names of a tree or shrub.
It was learned that W.I. bumper
stickers were available for distribu-
tion. Eva Allister spoke on the motto
"How does your garden grow?"
Janet Desjardine had a Grand Bend
scrap book on display for each one to
view, over lunch break. Hostesses
were Ann Russell, Laura Desjardine
and Clara Hamilton.

Main Street. This was formerly
known as Gord and Jeans.
Happy Anniversary to Christina
and John Rutten, Pinedale Subdiv.,
who celebrated their 40th, Saturday.
Family members joined with them to
celebrate with a dinner at Moulin
Rouge, GB.
The GB peewee soccer team
defeated Strathroy 3-0 Friday evening
in Strathroy. Coach Martin
Vandenberk feels confident in his
mainly underage players.
Lee Newton, Pinedale Sub., add
neighbours held a very successful
garage lawn sale over the weekend,
with good sales reported for
everyone.
A busload of 90 travellers left for
Expo '86 Saturday. They are being
guided , travel expert, Mary Mor -
rice, S.P.
Theresa Dugas spent the holiday
weekend with. her grandma, Clara
Statton. They enjoyed. some sight-
seeing aiid shopping 'iii the; village:
• The Grand Bend Golden Agers will
meet at St. John's Parish Hall on June
4 for their annual picnic. Please bring
your own lunch, dishes and cutlery.
If the weather is suitable, they plan
to drive to the Pinery Provincial Park
for their meeting and picnic supper.
The Couple's Club will be meeting
June 14, at which time they'll be con-
ducting a sale of some old chairs from
the Sunday school rooms. The sale
will begin around noon.
There will be an "Elegant Junque
Sale" on June 7 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
at Grand Cove Estates. The sale will
be held in the parking lot near
Highway 21. The rains date is Sunday,
June 8.
There will be a bake sale table, as
well as tables for Knick-Knacks;
glass and dishes; books; jewelry;
arts and crafts; potted plants and ar-
tificial flowers. They'll even have cof-
fee and doughnuts available all day,
while you browse thru the "Elegant
Junque". Don't miss it!
In the Legion News, the lucky win-
ners of the May 16 meat raffle were
Kay Allen, Howard Monteith, Dave
Martin and Dusty Miller. For the May
23 meat raffle the winners were Jim
Price, Art Chambers, George Gallant
and, once again, Dusty Miller. The
Mystery Draw was won by Judy
Roane.
The meeting on May 29 marks the
installation of new officers for the
1986.87 term beginning at 8 p.m. in the
Legion Hall. They'll also be holding
another steak barbecue on June 7,
from 5-8 p.m. at the Legion, so come
and enjoy the food and fun.
Minor Softball
The softball teams have been
drawn up and the kids have been hard
at work practicing for the 1986 season.
The first genie elf-* semen still be
starting this weeiraheady, with the
peewee girls (1144 years) In their
first game May 27, at Parkhill.
The Mites (840 years mixed) have
their first game June 4, with Grand
Bend I versus Grand Bend II. The
squirts (1142 boys) begin on June 5
against Lieury, at Grand Bend. The
peewee boys start June 3 at Thedford
(13-14 years) and the bantam boys
(15-18 years) begin on June 2 in
Parkhill. All games start at 6:30 p.m.
except bantams boys who start at 8
p.m,
The softball association still needs
financial assistance for equipment,
and sponsors for uniforms, especial-
ly for the peewee girls and the mites.
Any adults willing to donate their
time as assistant coaches would also
be welcome. Come out to the games,
it's time to "play ball!"
Guides, Scouts and Brownies
The First Grand Bend Girl Guides
enjoyed a special treat at their
meeting May 12, with snacks on the
beach near the home of Guide leader
Susan McKay. There was final testing
for badges and songs around the
campfire, to bring the year to a close.
There will be a mother/daughter
Fit-Nic dessert at the arena in Forest
on Monday, June 2. MX oat
will be presented with their
Cords on June 10 at a speotill
ceremony, held at St. John's Mikan
Parish Hall.
During the ceremony that evening,
12 Brownies will be flyng Up to
Guides, really swelling their relics.
The Grand Bend Brownlee will be
making a special yearend trip en
June 7. leaving at a.m. for
Goderich Camervation area, •fs* tl
nature walk. They'll be making per
sonal first aid kits and ttlptr
explorer badges, then en joyy a of
the Pioneer Museum and Historic Jain
to • earn their Provincial Neritaee
badge.The rand Bend Cubs are planning
a camping session May 30 -June 1, for
the Cubs and Scouts of all the Huron
District, to be held at the Benmiller
camp grounds -near Goderich. The
Beavers will be joining the older boys
for the Saturday program. The theme
fo this year's program is the circus.
This week marks the last meetings,
for all Cubs and Scouts until next fall.
The community owes its gratitude to
all the leaders for our boys and girls,
who give so willingly of their time and
talents to make our children better
citizens of the future.
