About six weeks ago the odds that the Montreal Canadiens would win the Stanley Cup were probably at about 50 to one and the situation would be the same for the Cleveland Indians to be ahead of the Detroit Tigers and Toronto. Blue Jays. The early season success of the Indians proves a point that most cities will support a winner. One of the home games a week ago drew more than 60,000 fans to Municipal Stadium. That's the largest crowd for any major league stadium this year. The attendance Sunday against the Blue Jays was down to some 13,000 but, that's about double the average attendance a year ago. At the time of writing both the Tigers and Blue Jays seem to have their early season woes corrected and are starting to climb away from their lowly positions. About three years ago we were climbing on the band wagon for Blue Jay rookie lefthander John Cerutti. It has taken that length of time, but, he appears to be the starting southpaw they need in Toronto. He has now gone 16 innings and allowed only two runs. The only apparent serious problem remaining with the Blue Jays is the inability for Dave Stieb to win a game. The other pit- chers seem to be coming around and turning in satisfactory performances. Lee O'Rourke a winner Good SH efforts Competitors from South Huron District High School turned in ex- cellent efforts in the annual WOSSA track and field meet in Goderich, Wednesday and Thursday. Lee O'Rourke who only a week earlier set the Huron -Perth senior tri- ple jump record at 11.02 metres won the WOSSA event with a distance of 11.02 metres. She was also second in the long jump at 5.31 metres and fourth in the 100 metres dash and in the 100 hurdles. Another Huron -Perth ,first place CATCHES 550 FISH — Jim. Salvona was the second angler to catch a rainbow trout at Morrison Dam that was carrying an Ausable- Bayfield Conservation Authority tag. Cassie Van Dongen was sixth in the 80 metre hurdles in 13.1 seconds and hit 1.4 tnetres in the high jump. Scott Bogart was sixthin long jump with a distance of 5.87 metres. The team of Lee O'Rourke, Stacy Somerville, Carol Peebles and Cathy Crowe finished seventh in the 100 metres relay and an eighth place finish went to the foursome of Beth Sweeney, Jeanette Van Esbroeck, Sandra Relouw and Vanessa Knox. In 200 metre dashes Mike Clark was clocked in 24.2 seconds and Steve at WOSSA meet Gibb in 24.5 seconds while Craig Win - Shooting scores Jody Mosurinjohn and Dwight Monck each recorded scores sof 21 to win Sunday's weekly competition at the claybird gun club. John Rempel was next at 20 follow- ed by Doug Moore, Scott Rader, Roy Lamport, Russ Gibson and Steve Ven- ner all with 19. Vic Rempe scored 18 and Raymond Playfoot 13. bow was ninth in 800 metres at 2.09. His 400 metre time was 54.1. In longer distance tests for the girls, Sheila Regier went the 800 metres in 2.49 and the 1,500 in 5.44. Beth Sweeney's time in the 1,500 metres was 5.20 and Vanessa Knox did 400 metres in 66.9.
