Taxp ors will pay 8.5 perc
The 1986 tax rate approved by Zurich
village council Thursday night calls
for an overall increase of 6.5 percent.
Clerk Sharon Baker said the total
residential mW rate of 376.06 trills
would increase taxes on an average
assessment of $2,000 by $43.26 over the
1985 amount.
The 276.06 mill rate is made up of
64.28 mills for village purposes, 38.65'
mills for the county of Huron, public
school 87.38 mills and 65.75 mills for
secondary school purposes. '
Finance chairman councillor Ray
McKinnon said the 10 mill increase
this year for village purposes was due
to the extensive repairs to Goshen
Street.
Reeve Bob Fisher said, "I feel this
is a fair mill rate. Over the past five
years our own levy has gone up by on-
ly 25 mills, that's an average of five
mills per year".
Clerk Baker added that there
weren't any major expensive projects
planned for the next year.
Ted Thorne of the auditing firm of
Ward Mallette said, "After 1987 the
only village debenture debt would be
in the waterworks account.
The auditor reported taxes
receivable were down to $9,000. He
added, "It's great to see tax arrears
that low. That's the lowest you have
had in five years."
In discussing the arena budget for
1986, reeve Fisher said "I think our
deficit will bias low as anybody's in
the area". -
To this Ray McKinnon added,
Recreation is what keeps a small
village going" '
No action was taken on a suggestion
from the Ministry of the Envirotunent
that sewer charges be increased to
create a reserve.
To this subject councillor McKin-
non said, "Our present surplus is
enough to cover any pump repairs. I
suggest we make no changes for
1988."
Taxes are collected four times a
year. The next due dates are June 1,
September 1 and November 30.

not have been what everyone might
have chosen for a holiday weekend,
it certainly did bring new life to the
gardens and lawns and everything is
looking fresh and green again.
We regret that Mrs. Hilda Turnbull
is a patient in South Huron Hospital,
Exeter. We wish her a speedy
recovery.
The progress of our new auditorium
is going ahead by leaps and bounds

it fully completed in time for our an-

asset for family gatherings and the
many other activities which will be
held in it.
