• National ball tryouts
An invitation to any young baseball players in the area with
aspirations to proceed to a higher level should read on for the next
couple of paragraphs.
The best of Canada's young baseball players will compete
against seven other national teams at the World Youth Friendship
tournament to be held in Windsor this year from July 31 to August 1.
Teams competing in this star-studded international round-
robin series include entries from Australia, Cuba, Mexico,
Panama, Taiwan, the United States and Venezuela in addition to
Canada's ma national team.
Under the overaU direction of Baseball Canada's coaching
supervisor Jim Ridely of Milton, two tryout camps have been
scheduled for Ontario residents who would like to make this Na-
tional team. Players must be between the ages of 16 and 18 years
during the present calendaryear of 1986.
The nearest tryout camp to Exeter will be at Labatt Park in
London on Saturday, May 31. The contact person for further in-
formation is Bob Bennett at 472-7792 in London.
Some 40 to 50 players selected from these and similar tryout
camps throughout Canada will train at York University in Toron-
to for two weeks beginning July 4, from which a trial National team
will be selected.
Sports trivia
Here are the answers to last week's trivia:
Despite being a very big man, Babe Ruth was speedy on the
bases. During his 22 year career, Ruth stole 123 bases and 20 of
his home runs were of the inside -the -park variety.
In the 1957 all star game, eight of the starting National League
players were from Cincinnati Reds. The game was played in
Cincinnati.
This week's questions are:
Who are the only four players in the majors to have more than
3,000 base hits and 400 home runs.
The Detroit Tigers had three managers in 1966. Who were
they?
Who wore the only three retired uniform numbers for the
Cleveland Indians?
