New elm trees
resist diseases
A new elm that is resistant to Dutch
Elm Disease will be planted in key
centres across Canada to mark Na-
tional Forest Week.
Special planting ceremonies will be
held in Port Alberni in British Colum-
bia - national forestry capital for 1986
- as well as in Winnipeg, Sault Ste.
Marie, Toronto, Ottawa, Quebec,
Fredericton and Saint John.
Commenting on the development,
the Hon. Gerald S. Merrithew,
Minister of State for Forestry, said
the little-known Japanese elm could
well replace the familiar American
elms wiped out by disease in many
areas of Canada.
The Japanese elm was developed
from two seedlings planted at the In-
dian Head Forest Nursery Station in
Saskatchewan in 1929. The new strain
is hardy enough to grow in most
regions of Canada and should be
available at commercial nurseries
within the next two years.
The new elm grows. to a height of 8,6
to 14.5 metres (30 to 45 feet) with a
trunk diameter of about 38 cen-
timetres (15 inches) at maturity. its
growth speed varies according to
climate and soil conditions.
Specimens grown at the Canadian
Forestry Service's research centre at
Sault Ste. Marie have averaged 60
centimetres (two feet) a•year.
In Asia, where the fungus which
causes the Dutch Elm Disease is
endemic, elm trees have had to

evolve mechanisms to counter the
damage created by the fungus. The
Japanese elm, which is developed
from this strain, has the ability to
close off the vessels around the
stricken area within four hours of an
attack, trapping the fungus in what
amounts to be a watertight bulkhead
where it dies.
It takes the American elm 24 to 28
hours to react the same way - but this
is too long and as a result it is unable
to stop the disease which spreads
throughout the tree.
"This is one of the things we have
been able to accomplish at our
research centres and the kind of
things we hope to accomplish in the
future," said Mr. Merrithew.
The Canadian Forestry Service
operates six regional centres and two
national institutes, across Canada. Of
these, four have been undergoing Ma-
jor renovations.
This kind of work is important, he
feels, not only to the industry but to
the future of the country.
"The problem is that when you're
dealing with forests you're talking
about something that takes 80 years
to come to fruition ... results you and
I will never see even though we're in-
vesting hundreds of millions of dollars
every year.
"But if forestry is to remain a vital
part of our economic future, this in-
vestment is not only essential but
crucial."
One of the aims of the four forums
held in key centres across Canada
'and the recent National Forest Con-
gress in Ottawa was to increase
awareness of all Canadians to this
fact.
"We have to make sure that
governments and industry work
together to ensure that enough money
is put into regeneration so that those
forests will be there. for our grand..
childreti," said Mr. Merrithew.
Before strongly desiring anything, we
should look carefully into the hap-.
piness of its present owner.
