Centralia airport was the site
Wednesday for an Ontario Ministry of
Natural Resources spraying seminar.
About 70 ministry staff and private
aerial sprayers familia rized
themselves with mixing, loading and
spraying techniques for use in spray-
ing gypsy moths in thousands of acres
of forest, mostly in Eastern Canada.
The seminar included a' refresher
course at London Tuesday followed
by the in air demonstrations at Cen-
tralia where 10 aircraft were used to

mix, bad and drop spray cargoes of

The spraying to be done mainly in
the region east of a line drawn from
Belleville north to Pembroke and will
concentrate on an area bit hard in re-
cent years by moth infestations.
John trooper of the Ministry office
in London said, "It's not a problem
yet, but we're starting to see a few
gypsy moths show up. The cater-
pillars or eggs laid by the insect can
be transported to Western Ontario by
campers in tt.i:ir tents or tent trailers
from Quebec or Eastern Ontario."
Cooper continued, "The gypsy moth
has an ability to move great distances
and it eats just about everything in-
cluding about 500 species of trees and
shrubs. The only thing it won't eat is
poison ivy.
The natural resources officer said
the spraying program to cover 1?3,000
acres this year is designed to control
the moths, not eradicate them.
The ministry has allocated about
$25 million for aerie! spraying this
year directed at the gypsy moth and
budworm.
After a public outcry last year, the
ministry used a biological pesticide
rather than chemicals on the gypsy
moths and on the growing problem of
spruce budworm and jack pine bud -
worm in the northern Alogma and
Lake Superior regions.
Cooper said the Centralia site for
the spraying seminar was chosen
because of better weather and most
of the aerial operators were from
Southern Ontario.

Vander Glas said the consulting
• service was set up after investigating
similar services in the northern
states, and receiving support for this
tyke of business from Pat Lynch, then
an OMAF soil and crop specialist.
Vander Glas noted that Huron alone
has 5,500 farmers, and OMAF can't
cover them all.
Vander Glas said he is concerned
about the family farm. He believes
agriculture is entering an era of in-
-credible technological changes, and
-predicts this will mean fewer farmers
*ming more land.

should be good stewards of their land,
and pass it on in good condition to
their children. For this reason. he
recommends to his foremost client
measures like grass waterways and
soil erosion techniques that conserve
rather than mine the land.
Research for the company is also
part of Vander Glas' job. Canadian
Agra Holdings are experinienting
with producing ethanol at the steam -
powered agri-park which uses steam
from the Bruce nuclear plant. Various
types of winter wheat with high
amounts of carbohydrates and pro-
tein are being imported from Europe
and tested for this purpose.
Digestors can use a combination of
corn and wheat, Vander Glas said, ad-
ding that could be advantageous with
the current low price for corn. Once
the plant is in operation, the ethanol
will be sold to the Oil companies to
boost the octane level of unleaded
fuel.

Maintenance
is stressed
Ontario Consumer Minister Monte
Kwinter warned home -owners today
of the danger of carbon monoxide poi-
soining if they fail to have their warm
air or hot water heating furnaces
regularly inspected and cleaned by an
authorized home-»eal:ing contractor,
'"Many people are sa glad to see
winter come to an end, that they
forget about their furnace until the
cold winds of autumn force them to
turn it on again," said Kwinter. "And
so they're gone from ope heating
season to another without having the
furnace serviced."
The importance of proper furnace
maintenance was underscored during
a recent inquest into the death of a
Toronto woman.
A coroner's jury found that she had
died in her home from carbon monox-
ide poisoning. The cause was at-
tributed to clogged flue passages in
the furnace, which prevented com-
bustion fumes from being expelled up
the chimney. Recirculation of these
fumes through the burners produced
carbon monoxide.
Carbon monoxide can go
undetected because it is a colorless,
odorless gas. It causes headaches,
dizziness, drowsiness, nausea and, in
Targe doses, death.
Home -owners are cautioned that it
is their responsibility to see that their
furnaces are maintained properly.
Refernece should be made to the in-
structions provided by the manufac-
turer or installer. If in doubt, consult
your fuel supplier or a registered
contractor.
