Several difficulties
in teaching Inuits
Two difficulties in teaching Inuit
children are the language problem
and the fact that the parents will not
waken the children to send them to
school after having been playing all
night in daylight. These were condi-
tions explained to the afternoon Ex-
eter U.C.W. by Mrs. Kemp. Clinton.
formerly a teacher at Broughton Bay.
East Baffin Isle.
Mrs. Kemp who was introduced by
Beryl Elgie Left the North eleven
years ago. Up to that time the Inuits
made their living by selling seal skins
to the Hudson's Bay Co.. and carvings
from soapstone and walrus tusks to
the Co-op. Since that time the Green
Peace Movement has cut off their
sale of sealskins. Now the Inuit are in
a bad way- unemployed. living on
welfare, turning to alcohol and drugs.
There were five teachers in the set-
tlement living in government provid-
ed homes heated with oil furnaces.
Water was delivered in cans. If you
ran out you could take your sled and
haul in a small iceberg. There were
no, means of communication except
by air or a boat in October. In the set-
tlement was a nursing statim, but no
doctor; one church, Anglican, which
was well attended. Mrs. Kemp is now
appreciating life in southern Ontario.
The beady of the earth was the sub-
ject of the worship service chosen by
Muriel Marshall, group leader. Jean
Noels, Chris Philips and Hazel Snell
read passages praising God for the
glories of creation. Muriel read an ar-
ticle on housecleaning which sug-
gested that while the women were
cleaning their houses they should also
be cleaning their minds by throwing
out such trash as resentment,
jealousy, old fears and hurt feelings.
During the business session led by
Olive Thomson, Jean Murray
finalized plans for the Friendship
Tea ; it was decided to cater to a
group from Hamilton; Gertrude
Hamilton and Beth Batten reported
•on Church in Society; Marion Dear-
ing reported on the needs of Camp
Bimini.

really is better than glatmow! Nat
that I still don't like to lath seamanahly

pawn to the latest fads.
And then, these's the matter of
staining. In past times I would
work for days to turn out a meal for
guests that would not only compare,
but also compete, with the ase we'd
had at a friend's house the week
before. Now, I stack jiffy casseroles
in the freezer and just pull one out
when we invite friends over for sup-
per. And somehow I think we enjoy it
more; at least, the hostess isn't nod-
ding off to sleep from exhaustion in
the middle of dessert.
Now that I can admit that my
energy level is not what it used to be,
I'm no longer compelled .tosay yes,
