The police committee recommend- ed d that the' towtt sign a contract with Alusitrna to change the present system over from Bell Telephone plained that the current r $fie Bell equipment at the local police ot- toman* ftinease t per month; whereas the new equipment from Muaitron could be 1e for raper month andwould be owned by the town at the end of a five-year period with a finalpayment of just over $200: The main objection over the pro- posaG came from Gaylen Josephson, Two cases in JP court Only two cases were heard by the Justice of the Peace Douglas Wedlake when he presided in Exeter court, Tuesday. In one, he tined Russell Hayter, 61 KingSt., Crediton, $175 after the man pleaded guilty tea charge of having care and control of a vehicle in which there was open liquor. He was charged on April Ll around 8:00 p.m. when he was spotted along with two other men standing beside a car on the Crediton Road. Two part bottles of beer were on the car roof. Investigation revealed there were two cases of beer in the trunk of the vehicle and a part bottle in the vehi- cle The court was told the beer didn't belong to Hayter. ft was noted that Hayter had previous convictions for similar of- fences in 1903 and 1984. He was given 30 days in which to pay. Philip Carl Ruggeri, 248 Regal °Cl ve, London, pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to yield the right of way. was charged on March 6 after his vehicle slid into an intersection on St. Lawrence Ave. in Falcon Park and collided with another car. Ruggeri was also given 30 days in which to pay. Throe sees for town poled, who suggested the town buy the equipment from Musitron for the quoted price of 12,623 and thereby save almost half of what it would cost under the leasing arrangement. "We're better to look at an outright purchase right now," he commented. However, when committee members said new equipment may be needed within the next five years, Josephson replied that it may then be wiser to keep the Bell equipment un- til the future needs are more clearly defined. Chief Larry Hardy joined the ittieulationt explain that the leasing proposal would keep the impact on the budget to a minimum and also - that there would probably be better service provided for leased equip- mentthanif it was purchased outright at this time. The discussion then moved to the county communication system as Morley Hall questioned whether the town was getting value for the expen- diture; which has increased 50 to 60 percent in the past five years to the town's current cost of 131,000 per year. Hardy explained that the system was a "lifeline" for the officers on patrol during the night. After noting the, two recent incidents where policeman have been stabbed in near- by centres the Chief said the central dispatch was "worth every dollar of the investment." He went on to say that providing 24-hour dispatch locally would require a minimum of five people and wages alone would be a minimum of $100,000 per year. Ffardy said it would be a very ex- pensive proposition, even if all the town departments were Three collisions were investigated hy the Exeter police department this week and damage was minor in all three. Two of the crashes were on Wednes- day, the first in front of 366 Marlborough St.. *hen a vehicle be- ing hacked from a driveway by Dianne Moody, Exeter, collided with a parked vehicle owned by Russell Waun of Exeter. Damage was $400. The other Wednesday crash was near the intersection of Main and NC.idley, when a vehicle operated by Roudina Peever, Exeter, wan pulling from a parking space and cut tai short and struck a vehicle owned by Dwayne Butter, Dashwaxt. Damage in that one was listed at *150. The final collision was on Friday when vehicles operated by Mary Ker - nick, Exeter, and Donald Advas, Cen- tralia, collided in front M the local. post office . The Kernick hehicle had stopped and was hit from the rear by the ' 'as vehicle Damage was esti n. ': at 1300 amalgamated into the answering and dispatch system. Mrs. Chapman added that the cen- tral dispatch was the only back-up an officer -had. "Without central dispatch, he's totally alone," she concluded. Reeve Bill Mickle added that representatives from the other five towns expressed concern about the rising costs at a recent meeting and it is hoped that all five will become more involved in the decision-making process related to the system which is operate i, , t of Goderich.. At the end& the debate, the com- mittee's report and recommendations . were approved. PUC follow town example Members of the Exeter Public Utilities Commissin will follow coun- cil's example in establishing the rate of their remuneration. The Commission advised council that they plan to survey the four other towns in Huron to determine the average stipend any will use that figure for their pa Similar to council, the PUC will use the 1985 average for their 1986 salaries. "is that approved by Ontario Hydro'" Reeve Bill Mickle sar- castically questioned. His reference was to the fact that many aspects of the PUC business are dictated by On- tario Hydro. Mayor Bruce Shaw responded that setting stipends for Commissioners was "the only autonomy this group has".
