About 70 ladies at Thames Road UCW
by MRS. WILLIAM ROHgE
Mrs- Dave Pawnore welcomed
some 701adies to the April meeting of
the U.C.W. Mrs. Passmore opened the
meeting with a reading "Our Native
Land". Mrs. Lorna Ballantyne was
the leader of a responsive reading
with the audience taking part.
Mrs. Jack Duncan read the Scrip-
ture. Mrs. Fleming Simpson led in
prayer entitled "To the Great Spirit".
We were favoured with a vocal duet
by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bray accom-
panied by Mrs. Reg Hodgert which
was much enjoyed. A reading "Our
Destiny" by Mrs. Gordon McCarter.
The offering was received. by Mrs.
Duncan and Mrs. Carter with prayer
by Mrs. Ballantyne.
Mrs. Passmore introduced Mrs.
Stewart Miner of Exeter who spoke on
her and her husband's work from 1958
for three years with the Indians on the
Indian Reserve near Sarnia. She gave
a real interesting talk which pertain-
ed to the Indians of which our U.C.W.
are studymg for two years. She was
thanked by Mrs. Duncan and was
presented with a plant,
Mrs. Barry, Jeffery welcomed the
ladies who . were from Centralia,
Elimville and Woodham and opened
the business part of the meeting with
a poem "Spring is All About Me". The
roll call was answered by 34 of our
ladies with a short cut on
housecleaning.
The treasurer's report was given by
Mrs. Reg Hodgert. Mrs. Don Richard-
son the secretary read an invitation
from Caven Presbyterian Church
ladies to meet with them May 12.
Mrs. Jeffery closed the meeting
with prayer. A deliciouismorgasbord
lunch was then partaken of. You then
sat at a table that had different col-
ored umbrellas in flower ar-
rangements for decorations. When
you arrived you were given different
colored umbrellas which you signed
and then pinned on.
Church News
Rev. Robert Matheson was in
charge of the regular church service
Sunday morning. The minister told
the story entitled "Who Are You,
Lord?" The choir sang "Freely, Free-
ly" acconpanied by organist Miss
Agnes Bray.
The Scripture Lesson was read
from Acts 9:1-20, Revelation 5:11-14,
John 21:15-19. The sermon was entitl-
ed "A Call to Confidence". The
flowers in the church were placed
there by the family of the late Mrs.
Mary Hodgert.
For centuries the church has
argued who is greater in terms of
faith: Peter or Paul? In our Scripture
lesson from Acts we hear of another
believer, named Ananias who is able
to trust his faith further than Saul or
Peter. We have three calls to speak
of today:
Jesus' threefold call to Peter after
his denial of Christ on the occasion of
Jesus' trial by the authorities. We
have the dramatic call of Saul on the
road to Damascus and we have
Ananias' call to receive and assist
Saul to become a new Christian.
The stronger example of faith we
have this day is the -unsung hero,
Ananias! At times we, too, are call-
ed to have blind faith in the face of cir-
cumstances which we know to be
adverse: if only we could be as
faithful, at such times as was
Ananias!
The official board meeting will be
held at Elimville Church Monday,
April 21 at 8:30 p.m.
The Explorers will hold their
meeting this Wednesday, April 16 at
7 p.m. in Thames Road Church.
The Messengers will meet at
Thames Road Church on Monday,
April 21 at 7 p.m.
