There was a great response and there are now 20 teams entered in this non-profit charity -fund raising tournament. The teams are from this area and hope that this will get more people interested in the sport. Proceeds after prizes are being donated to the Survival Through Friendship House which provides shelter and support for battered women and their children throughout Huron County and this house definitely needs all the financial support they can get. Anyone interested in watching some local talent can come out to the high school and catch the action. It will be fun and some competitive volleyball going on all day with four division semi finals and finals starting around supper time. Bounces Make A Difference One often hears that lucky breaks and the right bounces make the difference in a hockey game. Well, anyone watching the two home games of the Exeter Mohawks on the weekend will attest to that. Friday night, the Mohawks came out flying and outshot the Creemore Chiefs by five shots, but, could only score one goal. In addition the locals hit four goal posts in the first 20 minutes of play. Only 24 hours later, the Mohawks got about the same start with only two more shots on goal than the night before, but, they scored five times. The difference in bounces was enough to give the Mohawks a 5-1 first period lead. Quite a difference from the night before. The series continues this weekend with two more games. The Mohawks travel to Creemore for a Saturday night contest and then come back home for the sixth game at the Lucan Community Cen- tre Sunday night at 8 p.m. If a seventh game is necessary it will also be in Lucan, Sunday night, April 13. Any fans wishing to. travel to Creemore by bus late Saturday afternoon are asked to contact club president Gabby Mot at 235-0743 or 235-1174. Has Beans Successful The Zurich Has Beans were far from being what their name im- plies as they won the "B" division championship of a recent In- ternational oldtimers hockey tournament in Zurich, Switzerland. As one could say, the Has Beans won by a nose. The final game went into sudden -death overtime, but, it didn't take long to decide a winner. The period was only nine seconds old when Bob Johnston hit the Embrach net. While a player must be 35 years of age to qualify as an oldtimer some of the Has Beans are somewhat more aged. This writer played against at least three of the Has Beans in the old Cyclone league and that's about 35 years ago. The three we refer to are Bill Merner and Don and Doug O'Brien. Congratulations again to all the Has Beans contingent that ex- perienced a once-in-a-lifetime trip and the thrills that especially ' go with winning a championship. Michigan State Wins Congratulations are in order to coach Ron Mason and Jags Michigan State Sportans in winning the NCAA hockey champiol- ship Saturday night. Ron Mason has an excellent coaching record, first at Lake, Superior State and now in his third season at East Lansing. `, He is one of the founders of the Huron Hockey School and has relatives and many friends in the area. After getting home from the Mohawks game Saturday night we caught the last few moments of the Michigan State game. We arrived just in time to see the referee explain to Mason that an apparent goal to make the score 7-5 would not count because Michigan State had seven players on the ice. With 18 seconds to go and an MSU player in the penalty box, Howard pulled their goalie for a two man advantage and were able to get a shot on goal as the buzzer sounded. Michigan State's star performer Joe Murphy is expected to be the first NHL draft choice of the Detroit Red Wings. Carnival in Lucan The more than 100 members of the Lucan figure skating club will be presenting their annual carnival this Sunday afternoon at the Lucan Community Centre. The show entitled Video Hits will start at 2 p.m: and will feature a wide variety of costumed skaters of all ages. Marla Wilson is ' president of the club. Fifth game in Lucan Sunday night Mohawks bounce back to win third game against Creemore It took three games before the puck started to bounce for the Exeter Mohawks in the Ontario Hockey Association Intermediate 'C' semi- final. After losing a week ago 6-2 to the Creemore Chiefs in Creemore and Friday night 4-1 in Exeter, the Mohawks scored five times in the first period Saturday night on the way to a 7-3 victory. The fourth game of the best -of - seven series goes to Creemore Satur- day night at 7:45 p.m. with the fifth contest slated for the Lucan Com- munity Centre Sunday night at 8 p.m. If sixth and seventh games in the series are necessary they will be played April 12 and 13 in Creemore and Lucan, respectively. Suspensions will affect the rosters of both teams for the next game. One of Creemore's top performers Doug • Kerr will miss the next three games as the result of a butt -ending penalty early in the first period of Saturday night's games. • Bill Glover of the Mohawks who was assessed a four game suspension in the third game of the New Ham - Marshall's on to senior games Lorne Marshall and Marshall Dear- ing will represent Exeter in the On- tario District Senior Games in shuf- fleboard to be held in Dorchester. The Mohawks came out flying in the first period and carried the play to the Chiefs and outshot the opposi-„ tion 11 to seven plus four goal poets. With the teams playing five aside Dave Kinsman opened the scoring for the Mohawks at 6:53 of the first period with a successful shot from about 20 feet out as Brian Campbell passed from behind the net. Jim Guenther had carried the puck into the Creemore zone. Shortly after the opening goal, Campbell was robbed as he waltzed in on goal and Pete Tuckey was foil- ed on three straight good chances. Tuckey bounced a shot off the post, then was stopped by Weatherall 011 a good setup from Brian Baker and again when he broke in all alone but was hassled from behind just as he tried to shoot. The Chiefs scored the only two goals of the second period. Tim Dickey registered at 5.02 from Tim Abbott and Doug ,Kerr and seven minutes later Noel McEachern wheel- ed a shot in from the side. The final goal for Creemore came at 8.32 when Doug Coker stole the puck in the Exeter end and came in alone to beat Rick Pikul. A Big Reversal In Saturday night's contest, the Mohawks again started strong and outshot the Chiefs in the first period 13 to eight, but this time the puck bounced better and five goals were scored by the locals without hitting goal posts. The first score from the stick of Cam Doig actually hit the inside of the Macs win in pee wee play In a solid team effort the Exeter pee wee Macs defeated Huron Park 2-1 to win in the B championship in Tier II action this week. The Mohawks regained momentum early in the third period and Mike Clark's slap shot caromed into the net 1,1314 off the cross bar with Brian Horner and Pete Tuckey assisting. Near the six minute mark goal posts again came in to play as Doug Latta's shot bounced away. Hard work and determination paid off for the final Exeter goal at 9.38 as Mark Cronyn converted a pass from Brian Mercer. A few minutes later Dave Kinsman made a great defensive effort in clearing the puck away from his own net. OE? O.H.A. Int.
