First practice arranged for baseball Express
Big league ball players enjoying the warm weather of Florida
and Arizona -are not the only ones looking forward to the upcom-
ing season.
Geary Penhale, general manager of the Exeter Express tells us
he has lined up the first practice for his team.
It will be held in the new gym at South Huron District High School
on Wednesday, April 2 at 7 p.m. and any new prospects are
welcome to attend.
A meeting is being held this week to deterrlline in which league
the Express will participate. At the moment it appears as if it will
be the Western Ontario Athletic Association with exhibition games
against teams from Thorndale, Strathroy and London. WOAA
teams from the north would be from Owen Sound, Kincardine,
Walkerton and Clinton.
Any prospective players wishing further information on the 1986
Express should call Penhale at 235-1905.
Let's Support the Mohawks
After losing the first game of the OHA Intermediate "C" playoffs
Sunday to Creemore, the Exeter Mohawks will be in action on two
occasions this weekend and will need lots of vocal support as they
try to get back into contention.
The two strong clubs will meet at the South Huron Rec Centre
at 8:30 p.m., Fridaynight and at 8 p.m. Saturday night. While los-
ing the game Sunday, manager Doc Campbell was able to win the
coin toss and any odd games in the series will be in Exeter.
Despite the opening game loss manager Campbell is confident
his club is capable of bouncing back as he said, "They can be had".
Hockey School Expanding
We mentioned a few weeks ago that the Huron Hockey School
is coming back to the Stephen township arena this summer with
a longer schedule.
Arena manager Frank Funston told us Friday that a program
Sports Spotlight
by Ross Haugh
for local participants is being added for the week of July 21 to 25.
Funston also said he received a call from former Detroit Red
Wing coach Nick Potano inquiring about the possibility of sending
his 13 year-old son to the local hockey school.
Season Almost Here
Opening day for the 26 major league baseball clubs is no less
than two weeks away and most of the managers have their hands
full in cutting their squads to the necessary limit of 25 or in some
instances possibly 24. Each team has the option of cutting down
one from the usual 25.
Of interest to fans in this area, managers Jimy Williams of the
Blue Jays and Sparky Anderson in Detroit will have a tough chore
in deciding who to take north. Before spring training started it ap-
peared both teams were pretty well set with most of last years
rosters plus a few acquired over the winter months.
That situation is changing drastically. This is especially so in
Detroit where Anderson may be taking as many as five newcomers
back to the Motor City.
These would include Mike Laga who leads the team in home runs,
Scotty Madison showing he can play a number of positions, third
baseman Darnell Coles and pitchers Chuck Carey and Mike
O'Neill.
In Toronto, three pitchers in the minors last year have been im-
pressive and have an excellent shot at making the big league club.
They are Don Gordon, Jose DeJesus and Luis Aquino. Their
chances are being enhanced by the arm troubles of Gary Lavelle,
Bill Caudill and Tom Filer. Lavelle has already been placed on
the 21 day disable list.
For the first time a Toronto manager will be able to send out
two left handers in his starting rotation. They are Jimmy Key and
youngster Steve Davis. That's a far cry from the early days of the
Jays when the only southpaw on the entire staff was Jerry Garvin.
We will make a guess that the pitchers Jimy Williams will re-
tain in addition to the five already mentioned will be Dave Stieb,
Jim Clancy, Doyle Alexander, Bill Caudill, and Dennis Lamp.

Mohawks lose first semi-final game to Creemore
The 10 game playoff winning streak
of the Exeter Mohawks came to an
end in Creemore Sunday afternoon as
they lost to the Creemore Chiefs 6-2
in the first game of the OHA In-
termediate "C" semi-finals.
The second and third games are
scheduled for the South Huron Rec
Centre this weekend. They are Friday
night at 8:30 p.m. and Saturday night
at 8 p.m.
The Mohawks did not come away
from their Sunday trip to Creemore
empty handed. Manager Doc Camp-
bell was able to win the flip of the coin
which means fifth and seventh games
in the series if they become necessary
will be played in Exeter.
The fourth game of the best -of -
seven set goes in Creemore Saturday,
April 5 at 7:45 p.m. with a fifth game
if necessary back at the South Huron
Centre the following night at 7:30 p.m.
Additional games if required would be
in Creemore April 12 and Exeter April
13.
The Exeter club qualified to meet
Creemore by ousting the New Ham-
burg Towers in four straight games.

ing Sunday in the Shamrock "A"
championship final in Lucan were
defeated 4-1. by Strathroy.
The locals missed the aggressive
play of David O'Connor who is in
England playing with a soccer team
from London.
The only Exeter goal early in the
third period came from the stick of
Steve Dubarry on a three-way com-
bination with Mark Burton and Jason
Heywood.
The club ends up the season with a
record of 19 victories, 14 losses and
one tie. Goalie Scott Russell achiev-

of 5-2. Prior to that they had dispos-
ed of Tavistock and Hillsburgh in -
straight games.
Mohawks manager Doc Campbell
is confident his team can come back
against Creemore. He commented
Sunday night, "After we had a first
period lead they scored two power
play goals midway through the se-
cond and then counted quickly in the
dying moments of the second and ear-
ly in the third. But, we never gave up.
We couldn't seem to find the net in the
third period for the break we needed.
A few bounces our way and the out-
come likely would have been
different."
The only goal of the first period was
notched by Dale Gibbon of the
Mohawks with less than three
minutes to go as he converted a pass
from Brian Campbell.
John Nixon and Tim Dickey scored
power play goals for the Chiefs at the
midway point of the middle frame.
Only 26 seconds after the goal by
Dickey, Cam Doig put the Mohawks
back even as he completed a three-
way passing combination with Ran-
dy Kraul and Jim Benn.
The late second and early third
period Creemore goals both from the
stick of Doug Kerr pretty well sunk
the Mohawks for game one.
In the third period, Brian Gilpin
fired two more goals for the home
club. One was on a power play
situation.
