As Easter approaches, our minds
turn to the terrible day of Jesus
crucifixion, and the glorious one of
His resurrection. At that time, 2000
years ago, His enemies thought they
were done with this itinerant
preacher, this upstart whose simple
message worried them to death, turn-
ed all their sacred traditions upside
down, and threatened their cozy
security. And yet....
"Here is a man who was born in an
obscure village, the child of a peasant
rtant force in world
woman. He gre►p up in anouuer
obscure . village. He worked in a
carpenter shop until he was thirty and
then for three years he was an
itinerant preacher. He never wrote a
book, He never held an office. He
never owned a home. He never had a
family. He never went to college. He
never put his toot inside a big city. He
never travelled more than twohun-
dred miles from the place where He
was born. He never did one of the
things that usually accompany

"While still a young man the tide of
popular opinion turned against Him.

himself, who were all responsible for
putting Him to death, would never
have believed that the force of Jesus

concept of their known world, that it

His enemies. He went through the
mockery of a trial. He was nailed to
a cross between two thieves. His ex-
ecutors gambled for the only piece of
property He had on earth while He
was dying... and that was His coat.
When He was dead He was taken
down and laid in a borrowed grave
through the pity of a friend.
"Over nineteen wide centuries have
come and gone, and today He is the
centrepiece of the human race and
the leader of a column of progress.
"It is far within the mark to say
that all the armies that ever march-
ed, and all the navies that ever were
built, and all the parliaments that
ever sat and all the kings that ever
reigned, put together, have not af-
fected the life of man upon this earth,
as powerfully as has One Solitary
Life."

which we would probably have been
a part if we'd been there), and Pilate

giving them a different dream so that
they were stirred up to do mighty
deeds, and help build great nations.
They thought he was dead, finished,
buried forever, and out of their lives.
There are those who, even after all
the evidence is in, still believe that.
But, it seems to me, Jesus' Spirit still
moves over the face of the world,
whether we admit it or not, and we all
have the choice of ignoring Him, or
joining the catcalling mob, or united
with those who acclaim and follow
Him.
