,Mom opposed to hockey body cntct
To the Editor:
Last week's article in the London
Free Press about the young, injured
hockey player from Mount Brydges
has prompted me to write. I am very
opposed to body contact in minor
sports. I feel it detracts from the
game and as shown in the above men-
tioned story, adds an element of risk
that is totally •unnecessary.
But I am in the minority judging
from what I hear from other parents
at their sons' hockey games - "Hit
him! Nail him! Kill him! Take him in-
to the boards! Cream him!" and it
seems parents don't want their boys

to grow up "playing" like a "wimp's
ora "suck".
So I must begrudgingly accept body
contact in hockey. But I wonder why
we cannot provide recreational
hockey for those who wish to enjoy the
sport of the game without the seem-
ingly necessary roughness.
Are minor hockey associations
afraid that without body contact,
teams will rediscover hockey and all
the skills involved - passing, skating
puck handling and team play - and
perhaps challenge the contact teams
... and beat them at their own game?
I will continue to support my son in
minor hockey because it's what he
wants, now. But I will, also, continue
to sit on the edge of my seat hoping
each time a child is checked from
behind, he'll get up.
I will continue to provide my son
with the necessary equipment and I
would hope that each and every
parent would ensure that their sons
are provided with the best equipment,
too.
This equipment doesn't stop with
face mask, elbow pads, jock, etc. it in-
cludes the best training - not only the
child's but the coaches, trainers,
managers, referees and, yes, even the
parents.
A responsible parent will demand
that all these people involved are pro-
vided with the proper training and
credentials and that they are kept
well informed all through the season
of new developments and changes in
methods and rules.
A responsible parent will encourage
and display good sportsmanship, fair
play, respect for authority, co-
operation and best effort.
And above all, we should remember
- it is only a game - not worth "kill-
ing" someone over.
Sincerely,
Wendi Schwindt
A concerned hockey mom
