Figure skaters present pop concert Thursday night
The stormy weather of Friday, March 7 wiped out all activities
Planned in the area and the Exeter figure skating carnival was
no exception.
The carnival is taking on a different look this year as a pop con-
cert involving all 125 members of the local skating club ranging
in ages from five years on up to teenagers.
It will be held at the South Huron Rec Centre on Thursday, March
20 at 7 p.m. As most of the skaters are working on badges
throughout the year and will he at their best to show parents and
in many instances grandparents what they have learned.
This is one of the fund raising efforts of the club during the year
so hbw about getting out and giving the youngsters your support.
A lot of good hockey is on tap at the South Huron Rec Centre on
this coming weekend as the playoff tournament of the Exeter and
district men's recreation hockey league are played.
The tourney goes all day Saturday and Sunday with the "A" and
"B" finals set for Sunday afternoon. Here is a chance for local fans
to watch a whole bunch of games providing top notch
entertainment.
The following weekend, that's March 28, 29 and 30 Cam Steward -
son at the South Huron Rec Centre and Frank Funston, manager
of the Stephen township arena will be operating the annual South
Huron men's rec hockey tournament.
A lot of good hockey teams will be in the area to compete. The
finals will be played at the Exeter facility Sunday afternoon.
Signs of Spring

Mohawks take commanding three game
The Exeter Mohawks have taken a
comm nding three game lead in the
Ontario Hockey Association ,In-
termediate 'C' final series with the
New Hamburg Towers.
The Mohawks won the first game on
home ice Wednesday by a score of
11-5, took a 9-2 decision in New Ham-
burg Friday and won again in Exeter,
Sunday.
The fourth game goes tonight,
Wednesday in New Hamburg with a
fifth game if necessary at the South
Huron Rec Centre, Friday night.
The next opposition for the
Mohawks if they oust New Hamburg
will come from Creemore and that
series could start this weekend,
In the southern division, Dresden
leads Wallaceburg three games to one
and Port Stanley and Alvinston are
tied at two games apiece.
Penalties Galore
Sunday's 5-1 win for the Mohawks
was marred by an almost continuous
parade of penalties especially in the
first two periods.
Mohawks goalfe Louie Arts did not
allow any goals, but, he is not credited
•
with a shutout. That's because of a
very unusual play which resulted in
the only goal for New Hamburg.
Early in the first period, referee
Hugh Devin was calling a delayed
penalty on Bruce Yantzi of New Ham-
burg. But, before a Towers player
touched the puck to get a whistle Dale
Gibbon of the Mohawks from behind
the net passed the puck towards the
blue line.
Instead of reaching an Exeter point
man it went between two and down
the ice into the local goal which had
been vacated for a sixth attacker. The
goal was given to Yantzi who was also
penalized.
The Mohawks scoring attack was
paced by captain Randy Kraul with
three successful shots. Kraut tied the
score at 1-1 at 6.09 of the first period
"and only moments later came close
with a shot off the goal post.
What proved to be the winning goal
was notched by Cam Doig as he
sneaked the puck into the New Ham-
burg net from the side • with Brian
Mercer and Randy Kraut assisting at
the halfway mark.

The second session was only a
minute old when Brian Campbell
tallied as he used Dale Gibbon as a
decoy and hit the short side of the net.
Mike Clark also assisted.
Exeter captian Kraul made it 4-1 at
4.51 on a blazing slap shot from the
left point on passes from Kris Bedard
and Cam Doig and near 15 minutes he
roamed in alone to score with a crisp
shot. That completed the game
scoring.
Good Second Period
In New Hamburg Friday, the
Mohawks broke the game wide open
with six second period goals:
Rick Pikul back in the Exeter goal
for the first time in five weeks was in
top form and kept the Towers at bay
until the Mohawks scoring machine
slipped into high gear.
Coach Jack Chipchase got a good
offensive effort from all three lines
with Brian Campbell and Cam Doig
starring.
The Exeter defensive corps was
thinned when Steve Prout went out for
fighting in the second period and Jim
Guenther'suffered a mild concussion
when he was tripped and Tell heavily
backwards into the boards.
The Mohawks scored the only two
goals of the first period when Brian
Campbell completed a three-way
passing combination with Mark
Cronyn and Dale Gibbon and Brian
Mercer registered on a solo effort.
The Exeter lead went to 6-0 quick-
ly in the first seven minutes of the
middle frame. Cam Doig fired two of
the soeedv shots with Randy Kraut,
Brian Campbell, Jim Benn and Ron
Elliott assisting.
Jim Guenther scored on an
unassisted effort and Bill Glover hit
on passes from Cam Doig and Jim
Bennon a power play.
Before 40 minutes had elapsed
Brian Campbell and Pete Tuckey hit
for the Mohawks on passes from Jim
perm, Ron Elliott, Dale Gibbon and
Steve Prout while Steve Cole and
Brad Snyder replied for New
Hamburg.
The only score of the third period
came from the stick of Kris Bedard
with assists going to Mdrk Cronyn
and Ron Elliott.
In Wednesday's first game of the
series, the Mohawks came out flying
and scored three times in the first 10
minutes. They dominated play so
much that the New Hamburg coach
called for a measurement of Mike
Clark's stick right after the third Ex-
eter goal in an attempt to slow down
the Exeter club.
The first two Exeter goals came as
the result of persisent forechecking.
At 3.26 Dale Gibbon stole the puck
behind the New Hamburg net and

came around the side to score.
On a similar play less than two
"minutes later, Brian Campbell notch-
ed the second goal for the Mohawks.
In the next three minutes Mohawks
goalie Louis Arts came up with two
stellar stops. He robbed Brad Stere
from in close and grabbed a blazing
blue line shot from the stick of Rick
Cressman.
At 10.40 of the period, Brian Camp-
bell took a perfect pass from Ron
Elliott and deked NH goalie Rick
Baechler out of position to put the Ex-
eter club in front 3-0.
This goal was followed by the stick
measurement which was successful
and Mike Clark was penalized. The
Mohawks held off the Towers on this
power play, but, a following penalty
to Ron Elliott resulted in the first goal
for the visitors as Joe Schere took a

length of the ice to fire a high driving
shot past Arts.
The fourth Mohawks score came on
another steal. Brian Campbell was
again the instigator. He passed to Jim
Guenther who in turn relayed to Mike
Clark for a score.
Only 21 seconds after Clark's goal,
Dave Murphy scored for New Ham-
burg. With less than two minutes re-
maining Brian Mercer notched the
fifth Exeter goal with a blast that hit
the inside of the goal post and bounc-
ed in. •
The second period also produced a
quick start for the Mohawks. At 31
seconds Cam Doig scored on a screen-
ed shot on passes from Bill Glover
and Jim Benn. This brought about a
change in flew Hamburg goalies as
Tom Boehler came on.
At 5.41 Bill Glover beat Boehler on
passes from Jim Benn and Cam Doig
and exactly six minutes later Mark
Cronyn jumped on a rebound and
scored. Assisting were Brian Camp-
bell and Dale Gibbon.
Pete Tuckey scored Exeter goal
number nine on a three-way passing
effort with Brian Horner and Brian
Mercer at 12.58 and Horner scored on
a solo effort at 18.44 to complete the
Mohawks second period tallying.
Dave Murphy scored for New Ham-
burg at 3.42 of the third period on a
power play.
Near the seven minute mark Louie
Arts ,stopped Tom Chirstner on a
cleancut breakaway.
Jeff Brick and Brad Stere fired the
final two scores for the Towers while
Brian Mercer wound up the Exeter
scoring with a unassisted effort.
