Freedom from smoke
plan now underway
A recent Gallup Poll confirms that
the majority of Canadians, smokers
and non-smokers, believe that
i smokers should refrain from smoking
in the presence of non-smokers.
According to the survey an over-
whelming 85% of non, -smokers and a
surprising 62% of smokers agreed
that smokers should not light up
around non-smokers. The survey also
revealed that 87% of the people
surveyed, smokers and non-smokers,
believed companies should either ban
smoking totally at work or restrict it
to designated areas.
With this clear message The Lung
Association is introducing across
Canada a new program FREEDOM
FROM SMOKING: AT WORK. The
program is designed to deal with the
issue of smoking in the workplace.
The program consists of two manuals
-- TAKING EXECUTIVE ACTION
AND SMOKING: A WORKPLACE
ISSUE. Guidelines are offered to help
management and employees with the
issue of smoking in the workplace.
Sample surveys, company policies
and recommended steps and pro-
cedures form the basis for this ex-
citing new program.
"Because the health hazards of
smoking are well understood by
smokers and non-smokers, we expect
a positive response to this program,
says Betty Hunter of The Lung
Association, Huron -Perth Counties.

"Are you a racist?" was the ques-
tion posed by Jean Murray, program
leader, at the March meeting of the
Exeter U.C.W. She applied the
thought particularly to our native In-
dians and based her remarks on the
writings of Karen Douglas, an
Outreach worker among the Indians.
When our forefathers came to
Canada, they called the Indians
savages. We have had great difficul-
ty in erasing that conception. We call
them heathen and say they worship
nature.
In fact they believe in a Creator of
all things,.but they have deep respect
for nature. Their sun dance is not a
heathen ritual but a dance of
thanksgiving to the sun.
Besides religion we have wrongly
judged their habits of marriage,
employment and education. The
answer to the question seems to be
that white men are racists.
Brotherhood begins on a man to man
basis at home.
'The devotional period was chaired
by Marian Dearing with readers Vera
Mills, Ruth Elwood and Jean Murray.
The study was divided into three sec-
tions: Palm Sunday based on Mark
11:1-10; Good Friday, Luke 23:23-46;
Easter Morn, Mark 16:1-7.
During the business meeting con-
ducted by leader, Olive Thomson,
minutes were read and approved, roll
call and offering taken. A moment of
silence was observed in memory of
the late Mrs. Hilda Shapton.
