Next meeting will be held March 19 at 8 p.m. Yr we i. Woids are like apples of 'gold This week, I pulled a small, but uni- que, book off my shelves that I hadn't read for awhile. It's called, "Apples of Gold," and was given to.me by a dear friend, now dead, which makes it even more special to me. The slim volume contains excerpts from sermons of Peter Marshall, and takes its title from the biblical pro- verb: "A word fitly spoken is like ap- ples of gold in a basket of silver." Marshall suggests that the metaphor "Apples of gold," could mean several things... perhaps the apricot, gleaming golden amid pale foliage, or fruit carved in gold and set in a work of silver, certainly a piece of decoration that would be as brilliant as one could imagine. Whatever it refers to, it's clear, that "a word fitly spoken" is a most love- ly thing. I wonder if we ever fully realize how far-reaching our words are, and what impact they have on those around us? And do we ever stop to consider how much the words we speak reflect our true selves? Jesus spoke, quite seriously, about the words we use when he said, "A good man's speech reveals the rich treasures within him." And he also said that we will be justified or con- demned by the words live speak. Yet, how easily we bandy words about, often never caring where they will end. An ancient, but wise Greek philospher said, "Choose rather to fling a chance stone than to speak a chance word," because he knew that once a hurting word is•spoken nothing can bring it back; and it pursues a course of damage wherever it goes. Our character is known from our words because we can only produce through our lips what is in our hearts. A few words from us and our listeners soon know whether our minds are kind and sympathetic or hard and critical. We are constantly revealed by what we say. Most of us, however, put guards on our words when we're in public, and there's many a person who's the model of charm in their speech when they know they're being watched, who at home are sarcastic, critical and querulous. We should remember that the words that say the most about us are the ones we speak when our guards are down. So much for words that are "unfit - IMA Over 0 club Mrs. Florence Gould will be celebrating her 98th birthday on March 31. Consider, now, the "ap- ples of gold" in a silver basket" words; words that lift us up, that anything wrong with us giving words of encouragement, and we should never be slow in saying them. There It Seems to me... make tss glow with a sense of well be- ing, words that are all too 'rare, unfortunately. Words of encouragement come under this category and mean more than we can ever imagine. Think how many people there are in the world who are aching for a word of en- couragement, a word of cheer, to lift their morale, to give them courage. We often say things on impulse we ought not say, but there is never by Gwyn Wbilsmith are words 01 praise and appreciation. We all know how we shrivel and dry up when someone criticizes us, and how we blossom when complimented for something we've done well. So, why not pass on more "Apples of gold" to those who help snake our lives happy and easier. It seems to me people are starving for these apples of gold words.
