COMPLETE CONCENTRATION t- Public health nurse Helen West and Frances Bedard watch as Anita

Parents ask board
to hold kindergarten
St. Columban parents want their
kindergarten children in their school
and came en masse to indicate their
seriousness to the Huron -Perth
Roman Catholic separate school
board.
There were 45 parents crammed in-
to the third floor board room at the
school board's February 24 meeting.
Board chairman Ron Marey of Strat-
ford said the parents' concerns would
be considered further by the board ac-
commodation review committee.
The spokesmen for the group were
Frank Crowley and Steve Murray,
president and past president respec-
tively, of the St. Columban separate
school parent -teachers' association.
The kindergarten students from St.
Columban have always attended St.
Patrick's separate school in Dublin.
Director of education William Eckert
said the .school board set up
kindergarten classes in 1970 and both
Ecole-Ste. Marie at RR 2 Zurich and
the St. Columban school have never
had kindergarten classes.
St. Columban has four classrooms,
three of which are now used as
classrooms and the fourth is used as
a library/French room. There is tri-
ple grading in the school, with Grades
1, 2 and 3 together, Grades 4, 5 and 6
in another classroom and one double
grade with Grade 7 and 8 in the third
classroom.
The parents would like to see all
four classrooms used as classrooms.
They..propoyse that this fall, the eight
1mdergarten children from ,the Bt.
olumbart•come ttothe/schdo) ant' -be
combined with Grade 1 for a total of
19 children.
•
This would leave a double graded
class of Grade 2 and 3 in one
classroom, Grades 4, 5 and 6 in
another and Grades 7. and 8 in the
fourth classroom.
Murray said the parents are con-
cerned about the triple grading in the
primary classes and because of the
triple grades, the parents are also
bothered about the high number in
these classes. Project figures show 30
children in the Grade 1, 2 and 3 class
next year.
"For Grades 4, Sand 6 we're not as
concnerned," said Murray.
"We have not asked anything of the
board before," he said, adding, "We
have been satisfied with the triple
grades."
The parents proposal would require
on additional teaching position for the
school. There are now 3.8 teaching
positions in the school.
Principal George Van Slyck was
not present at the meeting and Mur-
ray said he had a previous
committment.
"He said he'd be with us in spirit
though," commented Murray.
Crowley also stressed that the
kindergarten children should come to
their parish school to strenghten their
ties with the St. Columban Roman
Catholic church.
Both spokesmen said they had no
quarrel with the board and they were
willing to work towards a solution.
The parents asked the board to
answer seven questions.
- Will kindergarten children generally
be bussed to neighboring schools?
- Should limits be set for triple grade
class size?
- Should they (triple grade classes)
not be smaller than single or double
grades?
• How many years should the same
children be in triple grades?
=!Whk't'will ,your policy before i
„terachdi'S'' Sidor? ' "
,r Will we all let primary classes go up
into the 30's with teachers aides and
eliminate the number of teachers?
- Are you willing to do this, decrease
the number of teachers for teacher
aides across the system?
Chairman Marcy said it would be
doubtful if any report will be brought
forward in time for the board's next
meeting on March 10.
Mary's Musings
You probably already know that I
am very fond of my car. I call her
Betsy, and she's a beautiful baby blue
Mustang. She just passed her sixth
birthday, arid she's aging gracefully.
I got her a new coat of paint last fall,
and she's been glowing all winter.
I think that Betsy is dear to me
because we've been through so much
together. She's brought me home
safely in all kinds of weather. I talk
to her, urging her on when snow is
scraping her undercarriage and we
can't see the road in front of us. She's
never let me down in a storm nor has
she caused any accidents or suffered
a scratch or a bang. All in all, we
seem to have developed an affinity for
each other and we get along well.
In fact, we get along so well that I
don't mind my long drive to London
two days a week, when I go down to
teach classes at Fanshawe College.
On the way into London I discuss my
lesson plans with Betsy, or recite out
loud the list of books I want to look up
in the library. Betsy is always a will-
ing listener. On the way home, we go
over plans for supper and decide what
papers I have to mark that evening.
But last week we didn't do much
talking. A very thick fog shrouded the
entire area, all the way from our
home on the Cut River to London. 1
could only let Betsy travel at a crawl.
i concentrated on trying to pick out
tail lights ahead of me, and kept a
close watch on the centre line of the
road, which was about all we could
see.
Needless to say i was pretty
disgusted with my Betsy when her
motor started to sputter. I certainly
didn't need car problems along with
the hazardous fog. Travelling in se-
cond gear didn't agree with Betsy, so
1 tried to shift into third. Still she
coughed and sputtered. She objected
to climbing the hill at Sylvan bridge.
We barely made it to the top as she
coughed along.
We continued at our slow speed, her
sputtering and me muttering. 1 would
have stopped at a garage for
assistance, but f didn't see one in the
fog. Besides, the had weather was
By Mary Alderson
already making me late --I was just
praying that Betsy wouldn't stop com-
pletely and we would make it to the
college.
We stumbled along for the entire
length of the Nairn Road. Finally
Lobo emerged out of the fog. l stop-
ped for a red light at the intersection
where the Nairn Road meets the busy
highway 22. Betsy stalled --her motor
was dead.
1 tried to start her, but she only
grumbled and rumbled, she refused
to start. It's most unlike her to be so
disagreeable. I tried again and again,
a fourth time and a fifth time. I could
tell her battery was getting weak. The
light turned green, and still
she wouldn't run.
--Out of the fog to my left came a taxi
cab. The driver was going too fast for
the foggy conditions. Too late, he
noticed the red light, squealed his
brakes, slid through the intersection
and then sped off.
Just then, Betsy started and 1 pull-
ed out cautiously, watching for any
other drivers who didn't see the red
light in the fog. We travelled the rest)
of the way safely, Betsy's motor run-
ning smoothly. She never stalled
again that day.
Had her motor not stalled at the
Lobo intersection, I would most cer-
tainly have pulled out right in front of
the speeding taxi. Is Betsy truly as in-
telligent as 1 give her credit for? Or
maybe we both have a guardian
angel.
