Grain storage, firm
not overly excited
Brad Marsden 'notes _ he is :_ nne
pessimistic but similar to most other
people in the agriculture business,
he's "not too excited by the prospects
for the coming year."
Marsden, a partner in Al -Mar
Grain Systems Ltd. with Ross Alex --
ander, both formerly of MF
Agribuilders, explains that low com-
modity prices have had the same ef-
fect on the small Exeter firm es ithas,
on everyone else in agriculture. ,
He unfortunately doesn't see any.
major changes in the situation "until
commodity prices smarten up".
Located in the former Milt Robbins
and Son building just north of the Ex-
eter OPP office on Highway 4, Al -Mar
provides a full-service grain handling
systems business and have just
recently added the David Manufacs_
turing line of in -bin dryers to theme -
stock. Those dryers include stirring:
devices, which are becoming more.
popular with farmers and custom
operators.,
The new line is fairly welt suited to
low temperature drying. "There's a
lot of interest in that," Marsden ex-
plains, noting that it is particularly
popular with small and medium siz-
ed producers because it is cheaper to
buy and cheaper to operate.
In the past year, the firm has notic-f'
ed that man of the systems they.

have installed have been larger than
in previous years. '
Five years ago, the average system
had a.eapacity of 5,000 bushels, while
now the.average runs between 10,000
and 15,000 bushels.
This suggests that many of their
customers are undertaking custom
work for neighbors.
Al -Mar provides a full service from
the design stage, through to building
the system and servicing it. They also
produce their own unloading equip-
ment, with manufacture of the auger
taking place in the firm's Exeter
headquarters.
Most of the systems are installed
from May through to October and last
year three people were added to the
staff to meet the demand. During the
off-season, the,partners concentrate
on displays at the various farm shows
in Western Ontario.
Al -Mar carries Butter and GSI
grain bins, Caldwell aeration equip-
ment, Butler and GSI feed tanks and
Cardinal grain elevators.
The firm did handle Vertec grain
dryers, but that Alberta firm ex-
perienced problems during the past
year due to the agricultural economic
conditions and have suspended
production.
Al -Mar has been forced to seek sup-
pliers in the U.S. to fill the void.
