SHDHS enters original play
in Huron 'drama festival
•
Page 5
'bourn Huron District High Schdol
will be represented at the. Central
Huron school. drama festival to be
held at Blyth Memorial hall on
February 28 and March 1. •
Exeter's submission, is a play, titl-
ed `Commencement', written by
South Huron District High School
English and Arts teacher Glenda Bur-
rell (who also directs the play) with
help from cast members Mark
Penhale, Kerrin Mehagan, Karen
Schade and Vern Iskauskas. The
stage crew included assistant direc-
tor Joanne Slaght, light and sound
technician Richard Voogel and stage
manager Karen Hunter.
"Commencement" focuses on
Karen, a first-year student in
residence at UWO • who is valedic-
torian of her high school. The day
before commencement she gathers
together 'her support system - her
three closest friends from highschool
- even though one is not graduating.
Karen's major dilemma is an in-
ability to cope with the present
without her friends, high school com-
munity and family.
As each of the characters deals with
change and the future in an indivudal
way, each also gives fleeting impres-
sions of the personal significance of
five years spent at SHDHS.
All plays performed in the festival
are written by professional
playwrights or have been an original
cooperative effort on the part of the
teacher and the cast such as the
SHDHS situation.
On February 28, the students from
the various theatre classes in Huron
will meet at Central Huron Secondar-
dy School for participation in a
number of theatre related workshops
and group discussions with profes-
sionals in their field.
The festival is designed to provide
not only a showcase for area talent,
but also, it fosters an exchnage of
ideas and promotes cooperative
friendship between students from the
participating schools.
As well, the public gets treated to
some fine entertainment.
On the opening night, Friday
February 28, Central Huron Secon-
dary School in Clinton will perform
the first act of Boiler Room Suite by
Rex Deverell. This is a touching play
about two skid row bums who, amid
the confusion and failure in their
lives, manage tout out personal fan-
tasies which both make us laugh and
touch our heart strings. •
Seafarth District Collegiate will
perform.an original script called A
Passage Throught Prime Time. This
play is a humourbus.look at our socie-
ty and its slavish attachment to the
television. The play is ripe with
parody.
To conclude the evening, South
Huron Secondary in Exeter will also
perform an original script called
Commencement. This piece deals
with the volatile emotions of a first
year university student who is called
upon to be her high school's
valedictorian.
On Saturday evening, the fine
entertainment continues. Goderich
District Collegiate leads off with an
hilarious comedy called Hurray for
Johnny 'Canuck by Canadian
playwright Ken Gass: Johnny Canuck
is Canada's answer to "Uncle Sam"
or "Captain America". The play has
a certain comic books quality to it
which will appeal to everyone both
young and old. Next, F.E. Madill
wry in Wingham will perform
their original script called The
Borderline.. This play deals with the
traffic
elementaci teenagers
up Wail increasing complicated
Armful world. It is an honest and
sometimes painful look at our need
for friendship in moments of great
despair.
To conclude the Festival on Satur-
day evening, the final adjudication
will take place with a number of
awards being given ut for outstanding
performances.
Tickets for students are :3.00 or
$5.00 for both nights. Adults will be
charged $4.00 for each night. Tickets
will bean sale at.the door both even-
ings, and light refreshments wW also
be served.
