Seek funds

Several new ideas on 1»' ' tit*
funds for the Huronia B
Ontario Iit>imane Society's
animal shelter were heard ' ' : the
annual general meeting.
The Huronia Branch has
ing for suitable lots on which *OP
an animal shelter which could Re
used as a pound. The price of - lots
already looked at have varied,
between 5.12,000 and 525,000.
"Sometimes we felt that we
within inches of getting land odyt to
find out it wasn't suitable", captain-
ed 1985 president Melodie Howse,.
In 1985, fund raising activities rais-
ed 55,422, bringing the shelter fund ac-
count to $8,877.69. This money was
raised through the .annual lottery,
garage sale, booths at local fairs, pen
and calendar sales and the Christinas
draw. This year the major fund raiser
will be The Herrmann Royal Lipizzan
Stallion show in Goderieh oil ,►y
25-26.
"This is to be the best fund raiser
yet. We're hoping to set up box seats
and the Huronia Branch will get half
the funds raised from them," said
Miss Howse.
It was suggested the branch do
more advertising through the radio,
newspaper and television to make
people aware of the Huronia Branch.
It was also suggested thatAcon-
tainers announcing fund raising for
the animal shelter be placed in malls
and banks throughout Hurott County.
Miss Howse told the few in atten-
dance that an agent is still being
sought. .
"We spet>d an awful lot of time try-
ing to find homes (for animals)", she
said, adding there are only two in-
spectors for all Ontario."
During the meeting at the Ontario
Ministry of Agriculture and Food,
Catherine McKnight was elected
president; Betty Jo Cudmore, vice-
president ;
ice -president; Joyce VanRiesen,
secretary and Jean Fox, tr'eastir'dr.

"It is the responsibility of Ontario's
Agriculture Minister, Jack Riddell, to
rescue Ontario corn growers from a
predicted 17 percent decrease itir.in-
come this year" claims P.C.
Agriculture Critic Ross Stevenson.
Stevenson was responding to a
published Chase Econometrics
Report which
.predicted Ontorio's
41113749 pecarsa'iultAlnew
U.S. Farm Bill. It
The U.S. Farm Bill has reduced the
loan rate for corn effectively a
minimum floor price - to almost POO
(Cdn) per tonne, and in the event of
a good harvest Ontario prices will
plummet.
"Ontario produces virtually thiee-
quarters of Canada's corn," points
out Stevenson, "and if Ontario's
Agriculture Minister does nothing,
Ontario's farm financial crisis will
worsen seriously."
Stevenson calculates that a support
program for Ontario corn identical to
the U.S. plan, would cost 5200 million
dollars. He says he is not advocating
such an identical program at this Mo-
ment, but wants to see immediate
consultations between all parties to
develop a two-year progam. Steven-
son feels at least two years are
necessary to deplete U.S. surplus
stocks.

Mary's Musings
By Mary Alderson
.............................................................
I wasn't going to write a column to-
day. I was just going to crawl right
back into bed. I have one of the worst
colds I can ever remember having.
You know the kind -- your head hurts,
your ears ring, you cough, you sneeze,
you can't breathe, and every bone in
your body aches.
Back in the good old days, B.C.
(before Chelsey) I would have crawl-
ed right back into bed. I would have
spent the day snoozing, sipping
gingerale and sucking cough drops.
And the next day, I'd feel better and
get up and out.
But of course, that was B.C. Now
that Chelsey's here I have learned a
new rule. Mommys can't be sick. It "
simply can't be done. Instead, Mom-
mys have to carry on, and the colds
linger on, too.
This morning 1 Thought maybe I
just might get back into that beloved
bed. I felt so rotten. I gave Chelsey
her breakfast and choked down half
a grapefruit past my oh -so -sore
throat. (Vitamin C is important, you
know.) Then I scooped up Chelsey
and throught perhaps she might cud-
dle in bed with me.
Ha! A 13 month old has no sym-
pathy for a sick Mommy. She spilled
a box of cough drops, shredded my
supply of kleenex and knocked the
lamp off the bedside table. And that
was in the first nine seconds.
Then, with one quick tumble and a
thump, she was off the bed. Mommy
hauled herself up with a groan and
closed the bedroom door. I went back
to bed, thinking Chelsey was safe and
sound in the bedroom with me.
She spilled my jewellery box, scat-
tered my nail polish bottles, and up-
ended a container of powder. .After
that, she pulled all my shoes from the
closet and rearranged the laundry
basket. My headache grew worse.
Soon she was slapping her tiny
palms on the door demanding to be
released. I let her out and fell back In-
to bed. After all, what harm oo01d
come to her? •
Well, no harm to Chelsey, bort
house was in big trouble. In apprdx.
imately 11 seconds, she managed t0:
throw a magazine into the toilet,
unravel a roll of toilet paper, pua
dozen record albums off the it
play with every knob on the s ,
knock a plant from the end table, e
all her diapers out of her change table
cupboard, and pounce on the ' ' . I
got up when I heard Pepper's - th-
ing growl. My Daughter of t' -
tion managed to leave a trail of havoc
wherever she went.
I dragged myself around behind
her, preventing any more damage.
Finally it was time for her nap. Amaz-
yingly, my .Daughter of Destruction
turns into a tiny little angel when
she's sleeping in her crib.
At last, my opportunity to go back
to bed. But I'm up now, so I might, as
well write this column. I'll just pulpy
box on kleenex and package of Halts
cough drops next to the typewriter.
