Said to be more accurate, easily monitored
Pork producers get deftIIs on new grtidlng system
Helmut Loewen of the Ontario Pork
Producers Marketing Board gave
details on the new electronic grading
system which will be in operation by
April 1 in all plants processing more
than .1,000 hogs (95 percent of the in-
dustry) to the 175 people assembled
in the Clinton Legion Hall for the an-
nual meeting of Huron County pork
producers.
The $28,000 probes are suspended
from the ceiling of ,the kill floor, and
inserted in the carcass seven cen-
timetres off the midline between the
third and fourth last rib. Sensors
measure back fat and lean. Payment
is based on the percentage of lean
yield.

Weights calculated in metric mean
a new index table, which will be in-
cluded in an explanatory brochure to
be sent to all pork producers before
April 1.
Loewen said the new system will
not pay as well on the lighter end of
the scale under 132 pounds, but the
new tables will give a better index on
heavier hogs - provided the extra
weight is not fat.
A back fat ruler to be used with the
new table has been devised for
smaller plants. Each leage plant us-
ing the probe will be required to have
an auxiliary machine on the
premises, and the manufacturer has
promised 24-hour replacement.
Graders in all plants will also have
manual rulers.
Loewen said the new system is
more accurate, more easily
monitored, and will reduce costs. Pro-
cessing plants will be linked into a
computer to collate data provided by
the new grading.
When asked what happe if the
technician misses the third and fourth
rib, Loewen replied that between the
fourth and fifth favours the packer,
and between the second and third
favours the producer. He advised his
appreciative audience to breed to en-
sure "solid bone between the fourth
and fifth ribs."
Loewen reminded his audience that
the deadline to apply to enroll in the
tripartite stabilization plan signed
jointly by Ontario and the federal
government is March 31.
Loewen said participants will be re-
quired to give three years notice prior
to withdrawing, and then will have to
wait another two years if they want
back in.

slaughter cattle marketed in Quarter
2 (April 1 -June 1) and Quarter 3 (Ju-
ly 1 -Sept. 30) of 1985. The basis for the
Ontario grant is the pounds gained
while owned by the applicant, while
on feed in Ontario, and sold by the ap-
plicant as beef slaughter cattle.
The following eligibility criteria
apply to beef slaughter cattle:
- minimum live weight is 565 pounds
when sold for slaughter;
- graded A, B, or C; or were sold at
prices equivalent to animals grading
(A, B, or C)
- fed in Ontario by an Ontario
resident;
-owned for a minimum of 60 days by
the applicant.
The poundage eligible for a grant is
the difference between: 1) the live
selling weight or 1,300 pounds,
whichever is lesser; and 2) the live
weight at the time of purchase or 475
pounds, whichever is greater.
Proof of slaughter is required for
heifers weighing less than 900 pounds
anti steers weighing less than 1,000
pdunds. A sales document indicating
purchase by a packer is acceptable
proof of slaughter. 1,000,000 pounds of
gain by a production unit is the max-
imum poundage eligible for a grant.
The Ontario grants are 4.6 cents per
pound gained on beef slaughter cat-
tle sold from April 1, 1985 to June 30,
1985 and 10.3 cents per pound on sales
from July 1, 1985 to September 30,
1985.
The Federal Stabilization payment
is based on total live weight sold. The
payment is 2.52 cents per pound of
slaughter cattle sold from July 1, 1985
to September 30, 1985. The maximum
number of beef slaughter cattle eligi-
ble for a federal payment is 2,000. One
application form will cover both the
Federal and Provincial programs and
one cheque will be issued. The final
application date for the Beef
Slaughter Cattle Plan is March 31,
1986.
Producers registered in the 1980 On-
tario Beef Slaughter Program have
been mailed application forms from
Toronto. Application forms for new
beef producers are available from the
Agricultural Office in Clinton.
