Lions do it again with successful Sportsmen's Dinner
They did it again!
That's right. Each year the Exeter Lions Sportsmen's Dinner
seems to be more successful than the previous one and this year
is no exception.
One of the largest crowds ever, enjoyed excellent food and the
same quality of speakers. Dolores Shapton, one of the organizers
for the Huron South Women's Insitutes who served the meal tells
us 528 person§ were served.the meal making it one of the best at-
tended dinners ever. The ladies are to be commended for providing
excellent service. Everyone was eating in 18 minutes from the time
service began, at the head table.
The highlight of. the dinner for most attending was the ap-
pearance of former Montreal Canadiens star Maurice "The
Rocket" Richard. In line with his popular television commercial,
the famous number nine could still get two minutes for looking so
good.
He picked an all star team of players he played against and his
choices were, rather interesting. The goalie was Frank Brimsek
of the Boston Bruins and Milt Schmidt of the same team was his
selection at centre ice.
The other four were Detroit Red Wings, defencemen lied Kelly
and Jack Stewart and wingers Ted Lindsay and Gordie Howe.
Richard was high in his praise of Mario Lemieux of the Pitt-
sburgh Penguins saying if he was with Edmonton Lemieux would
get as many points as Wayne Gretzky.
Next week we will pass on a few more thoughts of the dinner
gleaned from short chats with some of the celebrities.
Congratulations again to Lions president Doug Jamieson, din-
ner chairman Gerry Prout and the rest of the Lions in presenting
another entertaining event.
A busy spot
The South Huron Rec Centre continues to be a busy spot during
the final months of the winter and into the spring time which we
hope is not too far away.
In the auditorium portion of the Rec Centre, the Exeter Mohawks
are holding their fund raising elimination draw and a dance on
Saturday, February 15. •
The following Saturday during the day a ringette coaching clinic
' Western Ontario Women's Hockey League will be in town to par-
ticipate in a playoff tournament.
Competing will be four teams from London and one each from
Alttinston, Sarnia and Port Stanley along with the Huron Park
Pacers.
Local rec director Lynne Farquhar is lining up a full slate of ac-
tivities for area elementary school students during the School
Break scheduled for March 10 to 14. The five day program will be
entitled "Holiday Happenings."
'the Exeter Optimists, will be taking over all of the Rec Centre
facilities\for the weekend of April 18, 19 and 20 as they present a
Home and Garden Show:
Sports Spotlight
by Ross Haugh
will be held. It will be at the Technical Level One. The sport of
ringette is becoming very popular in the area with a number of
teams in Exeter and Huron Park.
A tournament will be held February 22 aid 23 to determine cham-
pions in the Exeter and district recreation hockey league. This
league of seven teams provides excellent hockey entertainment
each Tuesday and Thursday nights.
The following weekend of February 28, 29 and 30, an open men's
rec hockey tourney is planned for the South Huron Rec Centre and
the Stephen township arena. Cam Stewardson and Franit Funston
in charge of the two arenas are the organizers and it annually at-
tracts top notch calibre of teams.
The first weekend in March will allow area hockey supporters
to watch the female variety of on ice action. Eight teams of the
Bowl for millions
A note from Albert Van Dyken tells us about the fourth annual
Bowl for Millions Celebrity Bowlathon as a fund raising project
for the South Huron Big Brothers and Big Sisters Association.
Van Dyken's group has completely, free use of the Towne and
Country Lanes in Zurich for Sunday afternoon, February 16 from
1 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. or later if necessary thanks to the generosi-
ty of Tony and Marlene Bedard.
The local association is a voluntary service group which tries
to provide companionship for boys and girls who live in single
parent homes or who are in need of a close friend.
The funds are used for spial, events and outings for big and
little brothers and sisters, training sessions, counselling, printing
and advertising. There are presently 16 matches between big and
little brothers and sisters in the South Huron region.
Anyone wishing to participate in the Celebrity Bowl may obtain
sponsor sheets from the bowling lanes in Zurich, Albert Van
Dyken, Dorothy Chapman, Connie Illmanr or any member of the
South Huron group.
