Despite rumours
Hawks are healthy
Contrary to some rumors, the Ex-
eter and Area Junior Hawks Associa-
tion is not in financial difficulty, and
a meeting being held this week is aim-
ed mainly at attracting new members
to the organization.
While raising funds to meet next
year's operating budget will be a
large part of the, new executive's
work, current president Ken Dobney
notes that the organization is "finan-
cially sound" and there is no sugges-
tion that the team will be folded.
That would only become a possibili-
ty if enough interested people fail to
get involved and fill the many vacan-
cies that will be created on the ex-
ecutive through the retirement of
several present members.
Dobney said a large number of the
present executive, many of whom
have served for several years, plan to
step down. Many of those joined the
executive at a time when they had
sons playing on the team and that is
no longer the case.
Dobney also plans to step down,
noting he is slated to become presi-
dent of the local Legion next year and
said it would be impossible to do
justice to both jobs.
"We need some younger blood," he
continued, noting that the popularity
of old timer's hockey, rec hockey and
other activities prompt many in-
terested in the sport from taking an
active part in the Hawks.
Due to a substantial losing record,
the hawks have failed to attract fans
this season. However, it is a young
team and all but two of the squad are
eligible to return next season when
their added experience can be ex-
pected to help turn things around.
Dobney indicated the organization
would welcome any corporate spon-
sorship to help meet the annual
operating budget of abot. $20,000 per
year.
He explained that fund raising is
becoming more difficult for all
organizations and thuopularity of
dances has diminishedsince drinking
and driving laws became stiffer. A
dance staged by the organization late
last year resulted in a loss as less than
50 people attended.
The recent tournament resulted in
a good profit, but not to the extent an-
ticioated due to very little support
from local fans.
People interested in assisting the
organization are encouraged to attend
the meeting scheduled for Thursday
night at the rec centre at 7:30 p.m.
Dobney concluded by noting the
association is interested in hearing
from people who may be interested in
helping with coaching and
managerial duties for next season.

Four chances
The Exeter Hawks have only four
more chances to halt their current
21 -game winless streak before the
current season ends.
Three of those chances will come on
home ice as the locals complete their
away games on Saturday with a trip
to Thedford. Sunday night they'll host
Mt. Brydges at the rec centre and the
schedule is completed the following
weekend with home games against
Lucan and Mt. Brydges.
The Hawks were drubbed three
more times this weekend. Friday
night they were beaten 8-3 by Seaforth

Brydges and they completed the
weekend with their best effort but still
lost 6-4 to Thamesford.
The northern division Centennaires
opened up- a 4-1 lead on Friday and
were never in any trouble as they
bombarded goalie Jeff Laporte with
62 shots, while the Hawks could only
muster 23.
Scott Brintnell, Steve Gould and
George Pratt scored for the Hawks
and no assists were handed out on any
of the three tallies.
The game was a tame affair with

powerful Bulldogs scoreless in the
first period and were trailing only 1-0
at the 13.59 mark of the second when
