Times-Advocate, 1986-01-29, Page 28;1 Paw 12A Times -Advocate, January 29, 1906 Rider Scott Merner takes first prize in barrel racing competition Congratulations to 14 -year-old Scott Meitner, son of Larry and Louise, who won first prize in a horse riding com- petition for "Barrel Racing" over the weekend in Picops ( East of Toronto) There were 26 contestants com- peting from various places. Scott did very well with his horse, Sally Bar. In fact this was the first show they entered since Sally -Bar was sick this summer. More Barrell Racing is planned when they go to Sarnia on February 9 and then into the Big Competition in Toronto which is from March 4 to 9. Good luck to you, Scott. When the Merner family arrived home on Sunday there was still a lot of excitement going on - as later that evening a new colt was born - which they hope will be the future Barrel Race Horse. Sympathy May we offer our sincere sympathy to the family of the late Leroy Thiel who passed away on Friday, especial- ly to his wife Marie. Paper drive The monthly paper drive will take place tomorrow, Thursday, January 30 beginning at 6:30 p.m. Heart Canvass "February is Heart Month", so please be generous when someone comes to call on you for a donation. Welcome Welcome to town to Mac and Gwen McKellar who have recently moved into the Spruce Villa Apts. They are from the Goderich area. Maria Kende spent the previous week with her daughter, Miss Helena Kenda, in London while she was recuperating from a recent operation. Dog complaints There are still a lot of complaints about large dogs running loose around town, especially at night, and getting into everyone's garbage and dragging it all over the place! They sure made a mess down our street last Tuesday. It's too bad that now we have to wait till Wednesday morning to put our garbage out because of these dogs. Card parties The K of C (Seaforth council) are holding card parties for the winter months at their hall in St. Columban every Friday night at 8:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome to come out. The K of C of St. Boniface Council had a successful card party at the school last Monday night with 12 tables playing progressive' euchre. The group is planning something special for every month. T -A photo Mount Carmel PTA discuss playground The first meeting of the year for the Mount Carmel PTA was held January 22 at the school with PTA president Roberta Walker chairing the meeting. The first item on the agenda was an update, of the playground im- provements project. After a good start last year on levelling and re- seeding a Targe grass area and install- ing two baseball diamonds, work has begun on stage H. The oval race track -soccer field area has been plow- ed up and the topsoil removed in one low corner prior to fill being dumped there. Once the area is levelled, the gravel track can be reshaped and the re- mainder seeded in grass. A jumping pit and large sandbox are are also ' planned. making it quite a complete facility. A fund raiser is also planned for early April, with pay -as -you -pull tickets and a grand prize of two nights and three days at Chatham Wheels inn for the family. The PTA also hopes to purchase as new set of en- cyclopedias for the school library. The next item on the agenda was the upcoming Pinery Fun Night for the school children and their parents on January 31, from 7 - 9:30 p.m. Everyone was encouraged to attend and enjoy ice-skating, tobogganing , hay rides, chili, hot dogs and hot chocolate. Mrs. Walker asked for volunteers to patrol the hills for safe- ty, and for ladies to help serve the food. Then the principal of Mount Carmel, Mr. Laurie Kraftcheck was introduced. Mr. Kraftcheck explained what is required from parents and students fro the Science Fair in April, concer- ning content, construction, space limitations and appropriate subject matter. The possible projects can vary widely, depending upon the age and ability of each student, and the support of the parents. Ile also discussed high school registration and course selection for the grade 8 pupils, and the differences in 'grouping the mixed grades propos- ed for next year, and answered questions. After the meeting, a drawing was made for the candy from a huge Gingerbread }louse donated by Fin- negan's Restaurant in Grand Bend, won by Rosemary Glavin, grade 4. The $100.00 collected will be donated to the London Soup Kitchen.
