T -A photo Women's Institutes in tune with times Agriculture has always been of vital concern to all members of the Women's Institute. Mrs. Beatrice Reeves, President of the Federated Women's Institute of Canada has said - that the Women's Institute message is "If you eat then you are involved in agriculture." - Women's Institute members from every province were represented at the Second National Farm Women's Conference at Prince Edward Island. When the conference reached an im- pass as to its Final direction it was Dr. Ellen McLean, a women's in- stitute member and President of Associated Country Women of the World, who provided the solution. The Federated Women's Institute of Ontario at their November Board Meeting passed the following resolu- - tion: "That F.W.I.C. be asked to ar- range a meeting between represen- tatives of the Federated Women's In- stitute of Ontario and the three Pro- vincial leaders to gain an assurance and develop a time frame for the positive action they have promised on behalf of farmers.'•' The Federated Women's Institute of Ontario was the first group to be approached to provide financial sup- port for the Advanced Agricultdr'al Leadership.Programme, which they did. Jack Hagarty, executive director of the Agricultural Trust said that as he visited the various women's in- stitutes, he became "very impress- - ed" with the sincerity of the members - and was impressed to discover -they- - planned a year ahead. - He added, "I saw W.I. membersas visionaries. A lot of people perceive the W.I. today as being behind the times, but their support of a project like this (Advanced Agricultural Leadership Programme) shows the W.I. is, in fact very much in tune with, and even a little ahead of the times." At the local level all branches of W.I. have an Agricultural Convener and throughout the year have pro- grammes on agricultural related topics. Many W.I. members are ac- tive on their local Fair Board, leading local 414 Clubs and assisting on the family farm. Elgin County Women's Institute in 1985 assisted the Elgin County Federation of Agriculture on their very successful county caravan tour of farms in Elgin County. Now in 1986 Federated Women's In- stitute. of Ontario is providing a Leadership Development Workshop for key resource people who will in turn go back to their areas and -pro- vide further workshops on a local level. The two key workshops are: "Financial Planning" and "Water, Will we be another Ethiopia?" Among the topics discussed in the workshop on "Financial Planning" will be Power of Attorney, Partnership Right and Investments. In the workshop on "Water, Will we be another Ethiopia?" the topics will include GROW W11'H tits "Grow With Us" is the theme of the 1986 Provincial 4-H Leaders' Con- ference. The two day Conference starts January 31 in Toronto. The Conference will "kick off" a more unified approach to 441 leader train- ing on a provincial basis. A new "4-H Leader's Handbook" will be distributed for the first time at the Conference. Dianne Oldfield, RR 4 Seaforth and Sandra Turner, RR 1 Varna will represent the Hurob county 4-11 Leaders' Association at the Con- ference. Dianne says she looks for- ward to the opportunity to exchange ideas with 4-H leaders from across Ontario. Violet Malone, a professor and state leader of extension education in Il- linois, will be the keynote speaker at the Conference. GRAND BEND - 1 bedroom apartnient. The next euchre is to be held February 6 at 8:15 p.m. Dear Bill: In -the TA of January 15, Mr. Jack Riddell in his column "Jack's Jot- tings" had an article called "Drug Rules outlined". Through selective use of the proposed legislation Mr. Riddell, ( through a press release of the Ministry of Health) has tried to paint a picture that the legislation is welcomed by the Ontario Phar- macists Association ( O.P.A. ) On the countrary, O.P.A. has vehemently opposed this legislation as high handed and unacceptable. The O.P.A. has advertised in some 19 newspapers throughout Ontario op- posing the legislation and stating that the legislation is, as the headline goes "The Biggest Pill You'll Ever Have to Swallow" is being prepared at Queen's Park. I say "NO" to bills number 54 anti 55. In fact, judgingby the number of letters of support pouring into the of- fices of O.P.A., we pharmacists are convinced of the inadequacies of this piece of legislation and our stance. Included in Bills 54 and 55 are pro- visions to let anybody appointed by the Ministry of Health look at anybody's prescription records. Also included are provisions to fine $10,000.00 per pharmacist and $50,000.00 for the company he or she works for, charging more than government set arbitary prices and fees. This would hardly be necessary if co-operation was forthcoming from pharmacists and the government was expecting the legislation's acceptance by pharmacists. The list of objections by O.P.A. to this bill are too numerous tulist but, one thing is certain, it certainly is not acceptable unless a lot of changes are made to it. Also, it is worth mention- ing that the reason for the introduc- ton of Bills 54 and 55 was because the Ministry of Health was illegally issu- ing the Parcost/C.D.I. book without the co-operation of drug manufac- turers, one of whom stopped it by way of court injunction. in conclusion, it seems to me that this Minister of Health is hell bent on confrontation with just about everybody in health service, e.g. doc- tors and of course pharmacists. Us- ing legislation that threatens fines to get one's way is certainly not the Canadian way nor does it espouse Liberalism. Yours truly, Esmail Merani
