With Iry Armstrong and Bob Fletcher of :10/1e4e IS IT GOOD FOR A CHILD TO SEE A PARENT CRY AT A FUNERAL? Since a funeral service helps to meet the psychological needs of adults, it con also help a child work through his own griefs. The funeral will help the child learn to accept the fact that o death has occurred. One should not tell other adults, "Don't cry". These tears are the safety valves of your emotional being and you need this outlet, within good reason. of course. This suggestion applies equally well tp the children. They, too, should show their emotion, rather than stifling it. Being around other people, especially adults, will let the child know that others feel the loss of their loved one and are expressing their sorrow in a manner acceptable to society. A child con labor under the misguided and self -developed fantasy that he or she was responsible for the death of the loved one... because of something said or done which now would loom large. The love ex- pressed and the comfort extended by others will help the child to see their actions in o proper light. The decision to exclude children from funerals may be interpreted by them as punishment and become the basis for more fantasies. Call us about this.
