That mini thaw we had over the
weekend gave us a bit of a reprieve
before we get the promised reminder
that by the weekend we will know that
January is still with us.
After a cancellation caused by poor
weather, the Zurich Women's In-
stitute were able to hold the January
birthday party for the residents on
Monday evening. The program began
with ^ommunity singing. Mrs. Verlyn
Fisher gave a reading on "New
Years", followed by the piano
students of Mrs. Laurie Erb giving
their renditions.
Miss Ethel Gable gave a reading

Refreshments were then served.
We regret that Mrs. Rachel
Amanns is a patient in South Huron
hospital. The sympathy of residents
and staff is extended to the family of
the late Mrs. Annie Noakes.
On Tuesday, movies, t'The
Remarkable Mountain Goat", and
"lielp Mate" were shown. followed by
refreshments.
We welcome Alvin Steckle, a
former Zurich resident and Mrs.
Marie Oesch, formerly of liensall, to
the Home.
I am sure the ladies in charge of the
quilt for the Bean Festival are ap-
preciative of all who came to help
with the quilting. i believe there are
still a few more stitches to be done.
(Perhaps you should check before you
decide to come to help).
Bingo was played on Thursday
evening followed by refreshments.
Congratulations to John Cornish on
his 95th birthday. His family held
open house here at the (tome on Sun-
day afternoon, and 1 am sure he en-
joyed the large number of old friends
and relatives who came to extend
their good wishes. The Sunday even-
ing chapel service was conducted by
Rev. Richard Iiawley of Exeter
United Church.

Recently Donna and Diane Klopp
invited a few friends over to help wish
Sarah Wilson and Deb Fisher a hap-
py birthday. Little Sarah was three
years old on January 10 while Deb-
bie's was on January 16.
Earl and Doreen Oesch are happy
to announce the arriyal of their sixth
grandchild (and first girl)- little Cara
Faye, who is the daughter of Tim and
Faye Morris in Toronto. The proud
grandparents spent one and one half
weeks in Toronto, taking care of
brother Tyler, while Mom was in the
hospital.
Best Wishes for a speedy recovery
is extended to Leo Creces, who is a pa-
tient in South Huron. hospital.
Leroy Thiel has been transferred to
Parkwood hospital in London. His
wife, Marie, has been staying with her
son, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Thiel, in
London.
Mozart Gelinas, Jr., and Paul
Weido (employees of Bendix in Hen-
sall) attended a two day furniture
show in Toronto last week, and Julie
Gelinas visited with her sister, Rose
Kelly and family in London.
Brothers Doug" and Dan Masse,
from the Tenderspot spent last week
vacationing in Jamaica.
Miss Louise Itegier is presently
with her brother, Richard and Janet
Regier in Edmonton and will babysit
the kids while their parents go on a
trip. -
Martin and Theresa VanRaay
returned home on Saturday , after
spending a nice vacation in Puerto
Rico.
A good pastime during the winter
months is playing cards- a group of
three couples get together every Fri-
day night to play euchre and have
some fun, followed by lunch. Last
week the get-together was held at
Gord and Cecila's house.
Mr. and Mrs, Don Greet and
daughter Kimberly spent three days
with Mrs. Greet's parents, Peg and
Phil Leger of the Maple Woods apart-
ments and helping them to celebrate
their 40th wedding anniversary.
The students of St. Boniface school
enjoyed taking their turns (going by
grades) ice skating at the arena last
week. While on Friday, grade 3'ive,
six, seven and eight spent the day at
the Pinery near Grand Bend where
they enjoyed skiing and skating, also
hot dogs and hot chocolate for lunch.

A Valentine sweetheart dance is be-
ing sponsored by St. Boniface C.W.L.
on Saturday, February 8 from 9-1, at
the Zurich arena, with music by
Mozarts Melody Make's. There will
.be spot dances apd a door prize (so
come out and have lots of fun and a
good tune). Everyone is welcome!
Bring your sweetheart and join in the
dance contest. Advance tickets are

Entertainment by Skaters
The Zurich and Area Figure
Skating Club's senior skaters have
had an excellent season so far, and
now you have an opportunity to see
them in action.
Lisa Bedard, Kathy Verner, Jen-
nifer Overholt and Chrystal Jones will
all be skating at the Exeter arena on
Sunday, January 26 at 2:00 p.m.

Other area clubs have been asked
to send skaters- so it should prove to

under, which are available at the door

The Voice of Leo
The Zurich Lions meeting on mon-
day, January 6 saw 21 members pre-
sent and five guests from St. Marys
Lion's Club.
Zone chairman, Hal Thompson,
gave recognition to the charter
members; Lions, Vic Dinnin, Wes
Coxon and Howard Klopp, and hand-
ed out two perfect attendance awards
to Lions, Doug O'Brien for 29 years
and John Becker for one year.
Carl Finkbeiner was the lucky 50/50
draw winner. Intel -club visit were
made to Grand Bend Lions meeting
on January 16. The meeting on
January 20 was held in the lounge at
the Dominion Tavern due to
redecorating in the dining room.
Women's Institute
The Women's Institute held their
meeting at the Rest Home on Monday
following their Birthday Party for the
residents. The program consisted of
piano, accordion music; also,
readings. Everyone present enjoyed
Punch and refreshments.
Conference
The Catholic Rural Life‘Conference
will meet on Saturday; January 25 in
' 'London at St. Peter's Seminary at
9:30 p.m.
Golden Agers
Zurich Golden Agers met Monday
afternoon with 28 members and one
visitor in attendance. Due to the
absence of president Gen Doyle, Ed
Strachan, vice president, opened the
meeting by all singing 0 Canada, with
Gertie Fleischauer as pianist.
A few minutes of silence was
observed due to the passing of one of
our members, Mike Doyle. Secretary
Verda Baechler and Treasurer Bar-
bara Strachan gave their reports. An
invitation from Stan -Lee Seniors was
read inviting Zurich Seniors to join
them to play shuffleboard on April 23
at the Stanley Complex.

served a delicious lunch, which was
followed by games of solo, euchre and
bridge.
Anniversary
- Mr. and Mrs. Elam Shantz were
treated to a delicious dinner Sunday
evening at the Oakwood Inn, Grand
Bend by their family in honour of
their 45th wedding anniversary.

Jenny, Jody, and Jill all of New

Little Meredith Joy Adeline
Denomme, daughter of Larry and
Debbie, was baptized on Sunday,
January 19 at St. Peter's Church, St.
Joseph's by Father Bensette. The
baby's godparents are Bernie -and An-
nette, RR 2 Zurich, and by proxy,
Roberta and Ian Robertson in Van-
couver. A family get-together and
supper was held- at the baby's
parents' home afterwards.
Calvin and Mary Gingerich spent a
few days visiting with her father, Mr.
Sol Gerber, in Milverton, last week.
Neil and Gladys Gingerich are hap-
py to announce the arrival of their
granddaughter born on January 16 to
proud parents, Mary -Ellen and Neil
Skinner in Edmonton. Gladys is
presently in Alberta visiting with her
daughter and family.
A family birthday supper was held
at the home of Mabel and Nelson
Riley on Sunday in honor of her
mother, Mrs. Mary Gerber of the
Rest Home, who celebrated her 89th
birthday on January 15.
Happy :•:th birthday to Mrs. Mary
Desch on January 17 ( formerly of
Hensall) and is now a resident at the
Blue Water Rest Home in Zurich.
Gen Doyle spent last week with her
daughter, Barb, in London while she
was recuperating from being in the
hospital due to an operation.
Sister Florian of London spent a
couple of days in town last week at
the convent and visiting with her
friends.
Happy Birthday to Bridget Groot
who was eight years old on January
15.
A delicious supper was had at the
home of Heather and Paul Klopp last
Friday evening, celebrating three bir-
thdays. Celebrating were Paul, Lin-
da and Jerome- which was attended
by the Sweeney and Klopp families.
Diane Beattie of Mossley (near
Dorchester) spent the weekend with
her mother, Mrs. Thelma Thiel.
A belated Happy Birthday wish to
Frieda Moore last Thursday, January
16. To help her celebrate were
Margaret Hess, Ina Neeb and Gertie
Fleischauer (complete with birthday
cake' and a few games of cards).
