Irish continue first place lead
The Lucan Irish won their only start
of the week in the Ontario Hockey
Association Junior "D" western divi-
sion to maintain a lead of four points

The Irish Scored a 7-2 Wednesday
night at home victory over the
Thamesford Trojans. A scheduled
Tuesday game in Thedford was
postponed until Tuesday, January 28.
Two home games are on tap for the
Irish before the trip to Thedford,
Tuesday. They will be at home to the
Belomont Bombers tonight, Wednes-
day and the Brussells Bulls will be in
for a Saturday night contest.
Manager Jim Hearn announced on
the weekend that the Irish lineup is
being strengthened by the addition of
goalie Dave Rook. A resident of
Huron Park, Rook was with the Ex-
eter Hawks when they reached the
provincial semi-finals in the 1983-84
season and has been with the Junior
"B" Strathroy Rockets since that
time. He was not on the list of
Strathroy eligible players list releas-
ed on the signing deadline of January
10 and was picked up by the Lucan
executive.
In Lucan's 7-3 win over the
Thamesford, six players shared in the
goal scoring. Only Brent Martin came
up with a pair of successful shots.
Both of his scores came in the first
period which ended in a 2-2 deadlock.
Getting assists were Paul Barnes,
Bantarns win title
at Legion tournament
lie r.xeter Legion bantams were
winners of the consolation champion -
of a weekend bantam tourna-
ment in Durham.
After losing the opening game in
Durham to Hanover by a 3-0 score,
the locals came bouncing back to
blank Oshawa 3-0 and eke out a 2-1
victory over Clinton.
In the first game of an Ontario
Minor Hockey Association "CC"
playoff game, the Exeter youngsters
were held to a 3-3 tie by Lambeth.
In the first win in the Durham tour-
nament over Oshawa, Shawn Moore
started the Exeter scoring in the first
period as he converted a pass from
Tim Carter.
Tim Carter was back to notch what
proved to the insurance goal at 3:49
of the third period on a pass from Jeff
Hannah. With 20 seconds left in the
game, Jeff Kints completed the Ex-
eter scoring with the assist going to
Jeff Dalrymple.
After Paul Wright put Clinton
ahead at 4:03 of the first period of the
consolation final, it took the Exeter
club only two minutes to get back on
even terms. With the locals playing
shorthanded, Steve Anderson found
the Clinton net on a pass from Tim
Carter.
Only 27 seconds later and with Clin-
ton still enjoying a man advantage,
captain Jon O'Connor struck for the
winning goal on a pass provided by
Jeff Dalrymple.
Surrender lead
In the first OMHA game Wednes-
day on home ice, the local bantams
scored the first three goals and then
were forced to hold on and settle for
a 3-3 tie with Lambeth.
The Exeterites took a 2-0 first
period lead as captain Jon O'Connor
fired two successful shots with assists
going to Steve Lingard and Frank
' Wulterkens.
The third and final Exeter goal was
shot midway through the second
period by Tim Carter on a three-way
passing combination with Shawn
Moore and Jon O'Connor.

The Irish broke loose with four
unanswered goals in the second 20
minutes of play. Hitting the
Thamesford net were Paul Foran,
Glenn Marshall, Dean Schram and
Jesse Crawford.
Captain Bob Thirlwall was the top
playmaker with a pair of assists. help-
ing on one goal each were Dean
Schram, Scott Denomy, Paul Barnes
and Brent Martin.
In the final session, Grant Larsen
completed the Lucan scoring as he
converted a pass from Paul Foran
who had a three point night along with
Martin.Doug Haskett was in goal for
the Lucan club and turned away 30
Thamesford shots.
McCann gets 45
for Waxers
In three novice division hockey
games this week, Sean McCann of the
Exeter Waxers upped his season goal
total to 45 in 32 games and is only
seven short of breaking last year's
record of 45.
The Waxers have five games re-
maining, three against St. Marys, two
of which are this weekend and two
versus Strathroy.
In this week's action the Waxers
blasted Zurich 8-0 and the Exeter
atom Crunchers 8-1. The only loss was
4-0 to Lucan and it was the first time
in two years that the Irish have gain-
ed a victory.
Tracy Mitchell with a two goal ef-
fort led the Lucan scoring attack. Ad-
ding singles were Chris Haskett and
Jeff Campbell. Adding one assist
apiece were Matt Munro, Shawn
Fairweather, Campbell and Mitchell.
Ted Hoffman and Sean McCann
each fired two successful shots in the
8-0 win over Zurich. Single goals came
from the sticks of Marty DeBruyn,
Matt Godbolt, Gavin Snell and Steve
Stire.
Darren Kisls in the Exeter goal fac-
ed only three shots to record his sixth
shutout of the season.
In the win over the atom Crunchers,
Sean McCann again led with a hat
trick performance. Tim Hoffman was
next in line with two goals and Ian
Jean, Steve Stire and Marty DeBruyn
notched singles.
The lone goal for the Crunchers was
fired by Bryan Inch.
Offer ' karate
at Rec Centre
The South Huron Recreation Centre
will be offering a karate program
starting in February. First degree
black belt Ron Tyndall has been very
successful with his karate school in
the Holmesville area.
He will be coming to Exeter for an
eight week program. The program is
open to men, women and children,
nine years of age and over.
Classes will run on Tuesday and
Thursday evenings, 7:30.9:00 p.m., in
the RecCentreHall for eight weeks for
a fee of $35. Ron emphasizes that
along with the many physical benefits
his program offers, his students can
also gain self-confidence, self-
awareness and discipline through the
course.
The karate program begins on
Thursday, February 6. Those in-
terested in registering can do so at the
Rec Centre the week of 3anuary 27 to
31 during office hours. For informa-
tion call 235-2833.

Pee wees win first
The Exeter pee wees are one game
up in the first round of play in the On-
tario Minor Hockey Association
playoffs as the result of a 6-3 victory
over Lambeth.
The second game of the best -of -
three series was played last night,
Tuesday in Lambeth with a third
game if necessary, also in Lambeth,
Friday.,
In regular Shamrock league play,
the locals were blanked 34. by St.
Marys and in a Legion tournament in
Ripley, the Exeter club lost 2-1 to
Seaforth and 4-3 to Goderich.
The first playoff victory over
Lambeth was accomplished on four
unansweredgoals in the last half of
the game.
The first two Exeter goals in the
early part of the contest were fired by
Harlen Tinney with assists provided
by Jamie Bedard,Mark Burton,
Steve Dubarry and David Dalrymple.
With the score tied at two goals
apiece halfway through the second
period, the local youngsters started
Colonials still
in first place
After 14 weeks of play in the Exeter
men's rec hockey league, Colonial
Hotel holds down first place with 26
points, three more than the second
place Young and Restless.
In the first game this week, Bryan
Baker scored three tides, Jamie
Caldwell added two successful shots
and Pete Heeney scored in single
fashion to lead the Outlaws to a 6-2
win over the Whalers. Scoring for the
losers were Dave Bell and Dave
Hayter.
Ron McCutcheon fired two goals
and Ken Pinder and Larry Taylor
added singles as Pfaff Electric edg-
ed Exeter Inn 4-3. Tallying for.the Inn
were Morley Obre, John Coleman and
Tiny Passmore.
Two goal efforts from Brian Taylor
and Eldon McCutcheon along with
single scores by Jim Rolph, David At-
thill, Scott Pincombe and Glenn Thur-
man paced the Young and Restless to
an 8-3 win over the lea leading Col-
onial Hotel. Dave Bellshot two goals
for the Colonials and Steve Baynbam
notched a single.
In Algoma Tire's 4-3 win over the
Outlaws, Greg Hern led with a two
goal performance. Chipping in with
one goal apiece were Gerald Weido
and Larry Skinner. Counting for the
Outlaws were Bryan Baker, John
Bilcke and Pete Heeney.

Jamie Bedard netted what proved
to be the winging goal by converting
a pass from Harlon Tinny and three
minutes later Mark Burton registered
on a pass from David O'Connor.
In the third period, O'Connor tallied
on a.pass from Harlen Tinney and the
latter combined with David Sehwindt
to Set up Jamie Bedard for his second
in OMHA
successful shot of the night.
In the opening Legion tourney
game in Ripley, Jim Ahrens notched
the only Exeter score on a pass from
Jamie Bedard.
Steve Dubarry firedtwo successful
shots and Harlen Tinney added a
single as the locals were defeated 4-3
by Seaforth In a high flying second
game.

In the high -low doubles nament
finals held at Lucan Lanes January
12, Lou Quinn and her partner, Nina
Knee, earned the right to advance to
the provincial finals in Barrie by
bowling 202 points over their average.

Other pairs placing in the top four
were Diane .Williams and Danna
Hodgins with 156 points, Debbie Won-
nacott and partner, Tanny
Vanderhoek, with 138, and Bill Dixon
and Linda Kervian with 129. Good
bowling!
Three Lucan Lanes bowlers took
part in the Executive Bowl held in
London, January 11. Ron Mason, Deb-
bie Wonnacott and Cheryl Riordan
gave it a good try but the free trip to
Florida eluded them for this time.
