Church service
Rev. Robert Matheson was in
charge of the First Sunday After
Epiphany Church service on Sunday
morning. He told the children a story
entitled "Symbols of Baptism".
-The Scripture lessons were read
from Isaiah 61:1-4, Acts 8:14-17, Luke
3:15-17, 21-22. The sermon was entitl-
ed "our Growing Edge."
Isaiah's audience was working on
reconstruction of Israel and
Jerusalem - reconstruction of their
own lives. Speak of reconstruction
after war. These people were to offer
a beacon of hope to their neighbours.
God transformed people's suffering
into an opportunity to spread the
Gospel. Think of the Republic of South
Africa and the spread of the Gospel
there as well as in Uganda.
Holy Spirit is conferred on new con-
verts as result of prayer. Speak of
Philip and his work among the
Samaria ns.
Jesus' baptism inaugurates the
mission of the redeemed. John the
Baptist seen as last in lineage of the
great prophets. It is demonstrated
Jesus is baptised as a result of the will
of God. Sending the Spirit in direct ac-
tion of God. Jesus' baptism introduces
us to the concept of the Day of the
Lord.
Our growing edge: is a call from
God -to see beyond ourselves and look
to the needs of others. Baptism is our
mark as servants of God and servants
to the world.
There will be an elders meeting
next Monday January 20 at 8 p.m. to
be held at the manse.
The annual meeting will be held
Sunday February 2 after the regular
church service.
Anyone interested in Youth Confir-
mation classes please contact Rev.
Robert Matheson b}l January 31.
