Saturday Mr. and Mrs. Robert Jef- fery and Mr. and Mrs. Doug Jeffery were guests at the Jeffery -Flare wed- ding at Exeter United Church and the reception at the R.E. Pooley Legion. Congratulations Paul and Janet. Mr. and Mrs. Dave Passmore, Tom and Jon attended the baptism of Jason William son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Batten, Sunday at Elimville Church service. They were dinner guests later with Mr. and Mrs. Bat- ten in Exeter. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Duncan were Saturday evening supper guests with Mr. and Mrs. Jim Miller, Staffa. Mrs. Mary Hodgert, Hensall, Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Hern and Jeanna, Zion, Mr. and Mrs. Reg Hodgert, Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Cann, Mr. and Mrs. Brad Cann, Mr. and Mrs. Rick Parker, Tim, Erin, Ryan and Megan, and Michele Riehl were guests recently with Mr. and Mrs. Ross Hodgert and Alan. Church service Rev. Robert Matheson was in charge of the First Sunday After Epiphany Church service on Sunday morning. He told the children a story entitled "Symbols of Baptism". -The Scripture lessons were read from Isaiah 61:1-4, Acts 8:14-17, Luke 3:15-17, 21-22. The sermon was entitl- ed "our Growing Edge." Isaiah's audience was working on reconstruction of Israel and Jerusalem - reconstruction of their own lives. Speak of reconstruction after war. These people were to offer a beacon of hope to their neighbours. God transformed people's suffering into an opportunity to spread the Gospel. Think of the Republic of South Africa and the spread of the Gospel there as well as in Uganda. Holy Spirit is conferred on new con- verts as result of prayer. Speak of Philip and his work among the Samaria ns. Jesus' baptism inaugurates the mission of the redeemed. John the Baptist seen as last in lineage of the great prophets. It is demonstrated Jesus is baptised as a result of the will of God. Sending the Spirit in direct ac- tion of God. Jesus' baptism introduces us to the concept of the Day of the Lord. Our growing edge: is a call from God -to see beyond ourselves and look to the needs of others. Baptism is our mark as servants of God and servants to the world. There will be an elders meeting next Monday January 20 at 8 p.m. to be held at the manse. The annual meeting will be held Sunday February 2 after the regular church service. IRVIN RADER Dashwood Dashwood Seniors will meet at 2 p.m. January 20 with guests Mr. and Mrs. Erich Freiter speaking on their trip last summer to West Germany and Poland. Dashwood W.I. Dashwood Women's Institute met Tuesday, January 7 at the communi- ty center with president Mrs. Emil Becker in charge. This is the year of Peace, By means of a Maple Leaf she outlined achievements for 1986 - talk at institute, read reports, discuss resolutions, sponsor euchre parties, attend District events, be represen- tatives, make donations and wear In- stitute badge. Mrs. Eben Weigand reported on Fall Rally and board meeting. The district annual will be held May 15, 1986. The Sportsmen dinner with be held February 4 with volunteers from Dashwood W.I. Mrs. Alice Tieman, Mrs. Eben Weigand, Mrs. Aldene Wolfe and Mrs. Mildred Kellerman. The W.I. will sponsore euchre par- ties, with the first one January 21 Tuesday evening at 8 p.m. Others to follow are February 4. February 18 and March 4. The ladies were divided into 3 groups with group one bringing the birthday booklets up to date; second, organization of Women's Institute and the Handbook; third was French knots and candle wicking. - Lunch followed. heading "Mixed Signals, a visit to the middle ages." The visiting committee reported 14 visits and 23 boxes delivered. The new Altar Guild is Mary Rader and Mrs. Howard Datars. Roll call for next month will be to write a note to our adopted seminary student. One birth- day card was sent. Mrs. Adelma Mellecke had closing Devotions followed by lunch. Personals Mrs. Mary Rader, Mrs. Sharon Bennett, Nathan and Sarah visited last week with Mr. and Mrs. Ross Love, Grand Bend and Mr. and Mrs. Wellwood Gill, Craigwell Gardens, Ailsa Craig. Hydro rate up The rate of Dashwood Hydro is up 4.5% as of January 1, 1986. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Koessel, Lansing, Michigan, visited with Clayton Phile, Sunday, and at South Huron hospital with his aunt Tillie Phile. Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Stade receiv- ed word that Mrs. Mervyn Stelck of Bradford suffered a heart attack and passed away early Friday. The funeral was held Sunday. Kindergarten Mrs. O'Toole has many plans for the new year like units on snow, lights and shadows. They are also looking forward to going skating with the school on Wednesday, January 15 and 29. Santa came to all the children's houses according to Ben Glavin. He doesn't like the snow. Scott Gilfillan's favourite toy is a dinobot. Michael Wilhelm's is a stomper. Bradley Tiernan 1 kes his remote control car. Amanda Ellyatt enjoys her cabbage patch bunk beds. Grade 1 and 2 As a class they would like more quiet time and more fun and games. Lawrence Cole's favourite present was his G.I. Joe. Laura Cook's favourite present wasthe Heart fami- ly. Jennifer Grenier received a tape recorder. Rebecca Harrison's favourite was a computer. Jeff Sararas' favourite time of the year is his birthday. Toni De Jonge and Shari Beierling's favourite time of the year is Christmas. Grade 3 and 4 The grades three and four had trou- ble making up their minds which was their favourite Christmas gift. The most popular gift was a Wrinkles puppet. On Tuesdays and Thursdays at noon hour, Mrs. Westelaken is taking the 11, 12 and 13 year old girls and boys to practice the Knights of Colum- bus basketball free throw. Grade 5 and 6 The grades five and six class had a guest speaker on Wednesday, January 8. Mrs. Mittleholtz came to speak about Mexico. They got alot out of this presentation since they're do- ing a unit on Mexico. They are doing a science unit on crystals and grow- ing crystals. Grade 7 and 8 The grade 7 and 8s have begun thinking about High School Mr. Quad- ding and Mr. Graham visited their class January 9 to discuss the technical programme and course selections available to them next year. This class is planning a trip to the Quebec Winter Carnival, February 9-13. They would like to thank everyone who so generously contributed . to their bottle drive December 28. On January 14 the whole school will have a guest poet, Janis Rapaport, visit their classes. Mrs. Talbot is filling in for Mr. Linden while he recuperates from pneumonia.
