at Windsor competition pet
Congratulations to Kathy Merner,
daughter of Bob and Tootie, for win-
ning gold and silver medals at a
skating competition held in the Wind-
sor arena on Saturday and Sunday.
Kathy came in first for her solo (free
skate) and second for compulsory
moves.
Lisa Bedard, daughter of Paul and
Shirley, also competed and did well
coming in fifth in compulsory moves
and sixth in her solo.
The annual meeting of the Zurich
Agricultural Society will be held
tonight, Wednesday, January 15 at the
Township hall beginning with a pot-
luck supper at 6:30. The meeting will
begin at 8:00 for those who go later.
• Auxiliary meets
The ladies' auxiliary of the Blue
Water Rest Home held their January
meeting as usual last Tuesday even-
ing in spite of the bad weather. Eigh-
teen ladies answered the roll call with

who passed away suddenly on
Wednesday, January 8 especially to
his wife Gen, to Nora Theander of the
Maple Woods Apts. on the death of her
husband, Carl on January 8, and to
the family of the late, Mrs. Valeda
Corriveau who passed away on
January 10. Her husband Joe is a resi-
dent at the Blue Water Rest Home.
May we wish a speedy recovery to
Dennis Jeffrey who is a patient in
University Hospital due to an appen-
dix operation, and to Leroy Thiel and
Art Woodcock who are patients in Vic-
toria Hospital, London.
Mr. and Mrs. Don Beauchamp and
four children spent Saturday and Sun-
day with Elaine's sister Marlene and
husband Lennis Bedard in
Woodstock.
Several people in town have left for
Florida this past week and lots even
earlier. Guess they aon't like all this
nice soft, fluffy, white snow here that
they don't get in the sunny south.
Gladys Gingerich is presently
visiting with her daughter Mary -Ellen
and son-in-law, Neil Skinner in Ed-
monton; alberta.
Mrs. Ina Neeb returned home to her
apartment at the Spruce Villa on Sun-
day after bing away for two weeks
visiting with relatives in Kitchener
and Tavistock.
Miss Darla Gingerich, daughter of
Mel and Mary -Ellen Gingerich, spent
the Christmas holidays with her
parents, family and friends, Mom,
Dad and brother Dwight accom-
panied her back home to Richmond,
Virginia, and spent a few days enjoy-
ing the nice warn weather and see-
ing the mountains.
Mrs. Margaret Kalbfleisch enjoyed
spending the Christmas Season with
her children in Burlington and
Toronto.
Joey BeBus, son of Julie and Doug,
spent a few days in the hospital last
week, due to having his tonsils out.

Recipe
Honey Chocolate Chip Cookies
'/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup honey
1 egg
'/, tsp. vanilla
1'/. cup flour
'/4 tsp. baking powder
'/: tsp. baking soda
4 '/, tsp. salt
1 cup semi -sweet chocolate chips
1/4 cup chopped wb!nuts
Cream shortening and honey until light and fluffy. Add
egg and vanilla and beat well. Sift flour, baking
powder, baking soda and salt together. Add to the
creamed mixture and blend thoroughly. Fold in
chocolate chips and nuts. Chill and drop by teaspoon-
ful on a greased cookie sheet. Bake at 180°C (350°F)
for 10-12 min. (makes 3 dozen).

Council gives Taxpayers a break,
sets remuneration for 3 years
in action. unusual for a municipal
WO, members of Zurich council
passed a bylaw at their regular
January meeting setting rates of
remuneration for themsel which
will be in effect for their eagle three-
year term. Reeve Bob Fisher will
receive 865 for each regular council

cil' paygoes from $52.50 to 05 for
each reguar session they attend.

The Bean festival quilt (for next
year) is now ready for quilting and is
set up at the home in the Recreation
Room at the Apartments. Everyone
is welcome to come out and help if
they enjoy quilting. As they say "the
more the merrier!"
St. Boniface Card party
On Monday, January 20 everyone is
invited to a card party at St. Boniface
School gym at 8:00 p.m. sponsored by
the K. of C. of our parish. They are
also selling tickets on a car.
Tobogganing
The Youth Club of St. Boniface and
St. Peter's parish held a tobagganing
party at the Pinery on Sunday after-
noon, then- enjoyed going for pizza
afterwards.
Valentine's dance
A Valentine dance for February 14
is being planned by St. Boniface CWL
at the Zurich Community Centre with
Mozarts Melody Makers playing.
Tickets are $8.00 per couple and are
available from Elaine Beauchamp at
236-4687 or Wendy Masse, 236-4497.
Baptism
Lisa Lucille Masse, daughter of
Gerard and Henrich Masse, was bap-
tized at St. Boniface Church on Sunq
day January 12 by Father Mooney
with her godparetns being Janet and;
Steve Durand. A get-together, was
held at the baby's home afterwards

returned home by plane last Thurs—
day, after a delightful 18 days voca-
tion to Edmonton where they Spent
Christmas and New Years with their
daughters and families, Cathy and
Doug Fawcett and two boys in Sher-
wood Park, Alberfk, add Helen and
Wayne Horner in St. Paul's, Alberta.
Russell and Doug also enjoyed going
to see a hockey game in Edmonton
against the Hartfords.
Birthday Parties
A very nice time was had by all at
the home of Martin and Cheryl
Gelinas on Saturday, January 11
when a family get-together was held
in honor of their mother's birthday,
Marie Gelinas Sr. A delicious ham
smorgasbord supper along with many
scrumptious dishes were served,
complete with birthday cake, and ice
cream for dessert. Following the
opening of several lovely birthday
gifts, fun games of Trivial Pursuit
were played between the men and
women (with each winning their
turn.) Those attending were from
London, Clinton and Zurich area, a
total of 17 in all. Long distance phone
calls came from Vancouver and
Tillsonburg.
A combined birthday party was
held for brothers Jordon Jeffrey, who
is four years old on January 6 and
Jarrett, six years old on January 9,
sons of John and Lesley Jeffrey, along
with cousin Matthew Denomme, who
was six on January 4. A big party was
held in their honor on Saturday at the
Jeffrey home with 15 friends
attending.
A birthday supper was held at the
home of Jerome and Cannel Sweeney
last Thursday for Meagan Sweeney,
two. and Grandma Gelinas. Family
friend, Bob King of Listowel also
attended.

ed to Joanne Bridal, 16 on January 7,
Tim Westlake on January 4, Helene
Ducharme on January 7, Madeline
Gelinas on January 11. Also to father

Neil Gingerich's birthday was on
January 11, Gertie Fleischauer's was
January 9, and a special birthday con-
gratulations to our son-in-law, Paul
Klopp, on Tuesday, January 14, and
his twin sister, Linda Earle in
London.
Birthday wishes are extended to
Paul Johnston on Friday January 18
and to my husband Jerome, also on
.January 18.
The reeve will no longer bill the
village for speaking engagements and
similar functions.
The rate for committee and board
meetings other than those held before
or after a regular meeting goes from
$21 to $25. Pay for half-day meetings,
which had not been stipulated before,
will be $30. Payment for full day com-
mittee meetings and the convention
per diem remuneration drop from the
previous practice of paying council
rates to 850.
The mileage rate will be 22t per
kilometre while travelling on village
business.
Municipal employees received
basic wage increases for 1986. Hydro
and water system manager Charles
Eckel received a $1,130 cost -of -living

How nice, to have a January thaw
for a couple of days, and to know that
there is still a sun.
Movies were shown on Monday
evening followed by refreshments.
The regular monthly meeting of the
Ladies Auxiliary was held on Tuesday
evening. The program was provided
by the resident choir and a solo was
sung by Mr. Aaron Gingerich.
Refreshments were served following
the program.
The ladies of the Auxiliary have put
up a quilt in the recreation room of the
Blue Water Rest Home Apartments in
preparation for the draw for the Bean
Festival. They are inviting all ladies
of the community who like to quilt
(whether or not you are an Auxiliary
member).
We are still collecting Zehr's tapes
which can be cashed in at the store in
Goderich. You may leave them either
at the home or with one of the Aux-
iliary members. I also understand
that the former Zehr store in Exeter,
now Valu -Mart, is also going to con-
tinue the program for their own store,
so please save their tapes as well.
The sympathy of residents and staff
lakextended to Mr. Joseph Corriveau
and his family in the loss of a wife and
mother, Mrs. Valeda Corriveau.
Mrs. Annie Noakes is still a patient
in South Huron Hospital, Exeter.
Bingo was played on Friday even-
ing followed by refreshments.
The Sunday %/ening.chapel service
was conducted. by Rev. Charles
Henderson of Exeter.

Helen McAdams' hourly rate from
$8.10 to 88.50, and part-time clerk
Cathy Koehler had her hourly wage
upped from $5.10 to $5.30. Custodian
Gertie Fleischauer received an in-
crease of 20t, bringing her hourly rate
to $5.75.
Working agreements, terms of
employment and salaries had been
discussed at a special council meeting
called on January 2.
In other business, council received
two delegations. Pauline Miller and
June Fisher were granted their re-
que¢t that January 13 be declared On,
tariQ March of Dimes Day in Zurich,
and the "Marching Mothers" will be
conducting a door-to-door canvass to
raise 81,200. They are confident that
with Community support they can
reach their goal.
Doug and Don O'Brien came to the
session as representatives of the
Zurich Has Beens hockey team that
will be taking part in an international
old-timers tournament in Zurich,
Switzerland, in March.
All agreed with a motion by Coun-
cillor Herb Turkheim that the finance
and property committee work with
the Has Beans ipresentatives to ob-
tain a plaque to be presented to
Zurich, Switzerland, and Zurich pus
to be presented to the players on the
. three teams Zurictt Has Beans will
play against. A maximum of 8300 will
be allowed for suitable gifts.
The 47 team members, wives and

Baker expects the bank will be repaid
once the village receives its road sub-
sidy and the first taxes are paid in
February.
A court of revision was convened to
write off cancelled, reduced and
refunded taxes totalling 0661. t9.
Reeve Fisher reported that pians
for a pharmaceutical pick-up and
delivery service had to be shelved
because a new law forbidding such
services is slated to be passed soon.
MPP Jack Riddell has been petition-
ed about the matter.
