January 15, 1986 Shorten winter by looking ahead to fishing sedson Despite the consistent winter weather we have enjoyed for the past couple of months, there are a few signs of spring being just around the corner. In the mail recently we have received seed catalogues and the 1986 fishing regulations for the province of Ontario provided by the Ministry of Natural Resources. To avid anglers in the area, you have to wait only until April 26 when it will be legal to fish for trout. The bass season opens June 28. Ontario has more lakes and streams than any comparable jurisdiction in the world. More than 140 species of fish inhabit the more than 250,000 lakes, unknown miles of rivers and streams and 88,026 square kilometres of Great Lakes. Fishing in Ontario is enjoyed by about three million residents and 700,000 non-residents. It provides millions of dollars to local economies and creates tens of thousands of jobs. Fish populations in Ontario like those in other parts of the world have suffered from the degradation of streams and lakes and high fishing pressures. Protecting the basic productivity of the fish community will be the first priority in future management plans by the Ministry of Natural Resources. This includes protecting and rehabilitating fish habitats. Fish habitats include not only the water in rivers, lakes and streams, but also the total surroundings in which plants and other life forms interact to make life possible for fish. Most people do not automatically recognize the value of fish habitats. It is easy to enlist public support to protect a majestic river valley or a favourite swimming beach. And yet fish habitats are vital assets to Canadians. They are as essential to our com- mercial and recreational fisheries as topsoil is to farming. A fish habitat can be wiped out without most of us realizing harm has been done. The eggs of salmon and trout cannot survive just anywhere. They must be laid in streams where there is a bed of Sports Spotlight by Ross Haugh gravel. If someone hauls away the grave, the stream will flow as before on the surface, but will no longer be a stream where fish can spawn. Land filling and paving over marshes can cut off the flow of nutrients and food which fish need for growth. A multi-million dollar hydro project can take its toll, but so can a poorly installed culvert on a farm lane crossing a salmon or trout stream if it blocks fish migration. During the next few years, the Ministry will be putting emphasis on four key points. They will attempt to rehabilitate lakes and streams, increase Mohawks win tourney in The Exeter Mohawks came up with three excellent performances on the weekend to win the Intermediate "B" and "C" tournament sponsored by the Palmerston 81's.
