New book
on birds
William C. (Bill) Mansell has add-
ed a new book entitled Birds of the
Cottage Country .to his already con-
siderable canon of ornithological
publications.
Birds of the Cottage Country is
special in both style and intent: The
author writes about birds he has wat-
ched throughout a sixty-five year
period all across Ontario's cottage
country -- north of Toronto to Nipiss-
ing, from Grey and Bruce Counties,
across to Algonquin Park. He writes
in an intimately humorous style about
each species of bird as if he were
describing a familiar friend or
curious companion. He makes bird -
watching fascinating'and full of fun,'
while creating a definitive handbook
of some three hundred birds, •
sightings, dates and locations,
Bill Mansell has written numerous
articles for naturalist's publications
all across North America; he was the
founding editor of Nature Canada;
and hasmappedthe distribution and+
migration of indigenous birds4or thew
Royal Ontario Museum of Zoology. In
addition to writing two books,
Muskoka Daze and Muskoka Knights,
be has conducted a nature column in
the Huntsville Forester for thirty
years, and was the bird columnist in
Toronto's Globe and Mail for ten
years.

Want to keep on imports
said. "We have been able to negotiate
reasonable import agreements --
agreements which have protected our
industry.
Agriculture Minister Join Wise and
the Minister for International Trade,
James Kelleher, today announced
they are taking action to maintain the
authority to apply quotas on beef and
veal imports in 1986.
The ministers have decided to im-
pose and then immediately Suspend
a restriction on the quantity of fresh,
chilled or frozen beef and veal that
may be imparted into Canada during
1986. This measure, taken under the
authority of the Meat Import Act, will
then permit the regulation of these
imports into Canada during the next
calendar year, should such action be
necessary.
"This will keep open the possibili-
ty of regulating beef and veal imports
into Canada under the Meat Import
Act later in the year," Wise said.
"This action we are announcing today
serves as another example that our
Government is continuing to take
responsible action, whenever
necessary, to ensure the stability and
viability of the beef and cattle in-
dustry in Canada."
Kelleher said that, pending further
developments, "beef and veal will be
removed from the Import Control List
of the Export and Import Permits Act
effective January 1, 1986, and
therefore import- permits will no
longer be required."
The two ministers noted that beef
and veal import levels are warranted.
In order to "set the record straight
on exactly what we have done with
respec to beef imports," Wise detail-
ed thlctual beef and veal import
levels for 1985.
In 1985 Canada's beef and veal im-
ports are estimated at approximate-
ly 75,000 tonnes compared to the 1984
total of almost 78,000 tonnes.
In 1985, Australia is expected to ex-
port about 20,000 tonnes. New Zealand
is expected to export about 23,000 ton-
nes, and the United States is expected
to export about 20,000 tonnes, which
is similar to the previous year's level.
Imports from Nicaragua will be about
1,800 tonnes, which is less than half of
the 1984 level.
In 1984 the EEC exported 22,788 ton-
nes of beef and veal to Canada; com-
pared to 10,668 tonnes in 1985. That is
less than half of what came in the
year before, and only aboutd third of
what we were told to expect in 1985 if
