tthh ApPearagce of God - just like the
dawning of a new day. Biblical im- •
ages - Jews lived in light
(knowledge). Gentiles lived in
darkness (ignorance).
Racial discrimination is a part of
the imagery: Romans called non-
Rodtans 'Barbarians' distingusihing
them because they were unshaven.
God, coming into the world in light
(in the form of Jesus) cuts through
these barriers - adopting all people to
be a part of his kingdom, regardless
of race, colour or language - hence the
visit of the Magi and the ministry of
Paul to the Gentile nations.
Author of Ephesians explains terms
`convenant' and 'testament' for us
telling us we are all beneficiaries of
God's bounty.
Even now, at the first Epiphany,
Matthew demonstrates Jesus is in the
struggle of light versus darkness..
This time the powers at war are
Herod, puppet king of the Jews
against (genuinely interested equals
worshipful) ?1) Gentile strangers, the
Magi, wisemen.
