Stanley celebrations underway
By Mary Masa
Stanley Township's Sesquicenten-
nial
nial got off to a happy beginning when
s capacity crowd gathered to
celebrate at the Complex on New
Year's Day. Quite a number of peo-
ple were dressed in fashions of years
gone by.
Reeve Clarence Rau and his wife
Sharon greeted the guests at the door.
Floyd McAsh, Julie Webster and Ken
Rau entertained with piano music as
the crowd assembled.
Mel Graham made brief opening
remarks and introduced the program
numbers. Leona McBride favored
with several trumpet numbers, ac-
companied by Marjorie Hayter at the
piano. The Varna Singers sang
several pieces in keeping with the
holiday season. The very talented
Johnson Family of Stratford enter-
tained with fiddle music, step and
clog dancing, and recitations. r'our-
year-old Matthew was a big hit, play-
ing fiddle and keeping in step through
many of the dances - a terrific
achievement for such a little fellow.
Wine (compliments of the
Tuckersmith Municipal Telephone
Company), pop, cheese and fruit were
available, then coffee and a big cake.
Gordon Hill, chairman of the Steer-
ing Committee was in charge of the
sE1018
Eaily Bird Draw for five hundred
dollars which wound up the
festivities. He prolonged the excite-
ment with a fast -talking tongue -
twister of the Foot Brothers. The
lucky winner -Nora Heard of Bayfield!
Her ticket returns to the drum with
three hundred others for the big draw
on Homecoming Weekend in August.
Members of the Levee Committee
were Mel and Betty Graham, Bill and
Eleanor McAsh, Roy and Ann Brock
and Bob and Joan Caldwell. They are
to be commended for doing a great
job.
The Stanley Township school reu-
nions are being held on Sunday,
August 3 from 2 to 4 p.m. in connec-
tion with the Sesquicentennial
Homecoming weekend. ,
If you have pictures or
memorabilia, or know someone who
should be invited, please contact.
Blanche Parke at 262-5423.
Bill and Mary Chessell are happy
to announce the birth of another
grandson, David Edward William
Kreuter, . born to their daughter
Marion and her husband Steve of
Stratford. As I write this, I am with
them and can report that he is a dear
wee fellow, and good as gold.
time for anxiety
The return to school after the
Christmas break may bring an
onslaught of anxiety to some students
at South Huron.
In January course selections are
made and towards the end of the
month examinations will begin.
Course selections are a vital part of
a students eventual career choice. It
is important that all the neces ry
classes are taken in order to appl$for
the needed courses in university or
college (or other post -secondary op-
tions) and for the eventual career
co
choice. The days between the thir-
teenth and twenty-fourth will be
devoted to helping students from
grade eight to grade thirteen make
the correct selections.
On January 27, the first set of ex-
ams will begin and will run through
until February 4.
However, amid all the studying and
career decisions there will be a
respite. On January 17, South Huron
will host a talent show. Also ideas on
a spring formal theme will begin to
materialize and take shape.
