WHAT SHOULD NOT BE SAID TO A CHILD ASKING ABOUT DEATH?
Any kind of fantasy or fairy tole about death will eventually have t
be corrected or repudiated. Let's explore some common fantasies'?
"She went on a long journey" This con be interpreted by the child to
mean the person has abandoned him without saying goodbye. It can
further foster the false hope that the person will return some day.
"God took him to heaven". If God took the deceased to heaven because
He loved him, the child might conclude that God will toke him too!
This reaction con be fearful for o child to accept and more than he should
have to at his early years.
"5he is just sleeping." This con quickly cause o child to fear bedtime,
believing that he will not wake up when he should.
Many more expressions could be included. The wisest course is to
answer questions about death without such cliches or expressions that
will have to be changed or un -learned. Even if an adult cannot pro-
vide the correct answer immediately, the search for an answer together
can often help you and the child come to grips with the "truth of death."
If we can be of more help on this important subject, please call us.
