Let's have fun at
Play hard, play fair and have fun!
That's the motto of co-ordinator Helen Muller and her organiza-
tion committee for Sportsfest '85 set for August 16, 17 and 18 in
Exeter.
Sponsored by the Lake Huron Zone Recreational Association,
Sportsfest will provide competition in 20 different sports.
The various events are designed to encourage all groups to get
involved. This means activities for male and female for the young
and not -so -young.
There will be at least six events which can be handled by the
not -so -young. These include euchre, darts, shuffleboard, lawn bowl-
ing, horseshoes and trap shooting.
Other activities include ball hockey, basketball, tennis, a swim
meet, volleyball, broomball, water polo, flag football, soccer, slo-
pitch, softball and T -ball.
All participants will receive a Sportsfest button and awards
will be presented to those who are successful.
Spectators will be welcome and can enjoy themselves in the
refreshment gardens and the two dances planned for the Satur-
day night. Camping facilities will also be available for the weekend.
Helen Muller describes Sportsfest as a weekend "designed for
recreational and house league participants. Enjoying yourself and
playing the game for the sake of playing are the main objectives."
The Lake Huron Zone Recreational Association tries to en-
Sportsfest
when it comes to town
courage social and physical involvement in the hopes of develop-
ing ongoing participation.
The association covers all communities in the counties of
Huron, Grey, Bruce, Perth and Wellington.
It is hoped each community in the five counties will enter in
Sports Spotlight
by Ross Haugh
a number of events. So, look for a minor invasion in Exeter begin-
ning on Friday, August 16.
Scatcherd events
Mentally handicapped children attending the Scatcherd
Children's Centre in London will be the big winners in today's Dave
Scatcherd Classic.
This is the fourth year that Dave has made his Oakwood Inn
golf club available for this very worthwhile event.
More than 140 golfers and 32 tennis players will be paying 6175
to participate.
The featured guest is expected to be Ontario Liberal leader
David Peterson. He may be making one of his first public ap-
pearances following the anticipated fall of the present government.
Other notables participating should be amateur golfer Gary
Cowan, ex -NHL coach Bill Mahoney, NHL'ers past and present
Paul Henderson and Dave Hutchison, MPP Ron Van Horne, Lon-
don mayor Al Gleason, NHL agent Allan Eagleson and Darwin
Semotiuk of UWO.
Clinton OSS
The feature event this coming Sunday at Clinton Raceway will
be Ontario Sire Stakes race for two-year-old colts.
History has shown that when colts in this category come to
Clinton Raceway, speed records are set.
That was the case two years ago when Norm McKnight Jr.
followed Dunnville Scamp across the finish line in 1.59.4. That's
an excellent time for two -year-olds on a half -mile track.
Some of the colts expected in Clinton, Sunday are Fella Dallas,
Senor Ralph, Back to Basics, Sea to Sea, Smoky Cedarwood and
Armbro Elgin.
Fella Dallas and Senor Ralph have alrady won OSS division
events in Windsor. Both are owned by Ernie and Marion Spruce
of Rexdale.
