Students warned
about smoking
Students in high school classrooms
in major centres throughout Ontario
are witnessing for themselves the
dramatic and immediate effects
which smoking has on the human
body.
Through the use of the Lung
Association's "Biomonitqring Pro-
gram", students utilize biofeedback
equipment to demonstrate immediate
changesin the carbon monoxide level,
heart rate, hand tremor and skin
temperature caused by cigarette
smoking. Says Marybelle Ford of the
Lung Association of Huron Perth.
"In most cases". continues Ford.
"smoking iminediately increases tt{e
level of carbon monoxide in the blood,
increases heart rate, increases hand
tremor and lowers skin temperature.
The primary goal is to demonstrate
to young people that smoking does af-
fect them adversely and immediate -1.
ly". Statistics show that 17 percent ot
boys and 22 percent of girls are
regular smokers by the age of 14.
The Lung Association is.pleased to
provide this program to high school
students in Ontario. If you would like
more information about this pro-
gram, contact Marybelle Ford
