Church groups meet
The May meeting of the Y.C.W. of
Carmel Church was held on Monday
with Mrs. Snell in charge of the devo-
tional, assisted by Florence Hyde and
Ruby Bell. The theme of the devo-
tional was "Home and Spring". Jean
opened with a reading on Mothers of
the Bible, which was most interesting.
Jean gave a poem on the Month of
May and thanked those assisting her.
Margaret Hoggarth presided for
the business meeting. The roll call
was answered by your- favourite
flower. The Anniversary of the church
will be June 2, when Rev. Linda
Brown, London, will be guest speaker.
The annual P.C.W. birthday party
will be on June 1.
Margaret closed the meeting with
the Irish blessing.
• Unit• 3
Unit Three of Hensall United
Church met on Tuesday, May 7 at 1:30
p.m. in the Church Parlor. The
meeting opened with the theme song
followed by the theme prayer.
Beatrice Munn conducted the worship
and read a poem on "Mother's Day".
President Dorothy Parker presided
for the meeting, opened with a poem
"Mother's Day", and welcomed
everyone. The roll call was answered
with a plant exchange.
A letter was read from Peter and
Susan Frayne, and a "Thank you"
card from Ardys Glenn. Helen
Roberts gave the study on Dr. Ian and
Rowena Robb. "Mission Couples Ex-
periences in Korea".
Vera Ross played a piano solo "A
tribute to Mother" for the program.
The president reviewed the June
meeting and thanked all who took
part. The meeting closed with the
benediction. Hostesses were Fredo
Boa and Helen Roberts.
Appreciation Night Well Attended
The manager and staff of The Bank
of Montreal held an appreciation
night on Wednesday at the Fellowship
Hall of Hensall United Church, which
was well attended. Rev. Stan
McDonald opened the evening by
leading a sing -song with Mary Broad -
foot accompanying at the piano.
-Mrs. Doreen Welsh, Manager,
spoke briefly. She welcomed all and
outlined many benefits and advan-
tages the bank offers senior
customers.
Following some old-time favourite
songs, games were played with the
following prize winners: Myrtle Sher-
ritt, Anita Bengough, Edna McLellan,
Carl Payne, Harold Parker and Ethel
Knowles.
Happy Birthday was sung for Joe
McLellan, who was celebrating his
birthday.
Mrs. Hilda Payne, president of the
Three Links Seniors, thanked the staff
for an evening well spent and invited
anyone to attend Seniors meetings.
Refreshments were served.
Personals
Dr. Robert Mickle and Dr. Robert
Ray Hoff from the Atmospheric En-
vironment Service in Toronto spent
Tuesday of last week at the
Agricultural College in Centralia and
had dinner and a visit that evening
with the former's mother Mrs. Laird
Mickle.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Chaffe and
Sally of Mitchell spent Sunday with
Mrs. Chaffe's mother Mrs. Hazel
Corbett.
Mrs. Ross MacMillan, Waterloo,
spent Friday with her mother Mrs.
Laird Mickle in Hensall and London.
Carmel Presbyterian
Rev. Kenneth Knight conducted
worship in Carmel Presbyterian
Church on Sunday - his sermon was
on "Honourable Parents".
The choir led by Miss Carolyn Love
at the organ sang two anthems,
"Faith of Our Mother's" and
"Mother's Love".
The sanctuary was beautifully
decorated with spring flowers.
Queensway Nursing Home
The ladies from Hensall United
Church, Unit 2, were here on Monday
afternoon to play bingo. Present were
Shirley McAllister, Kay Mock and
Hazel Corbett. After the games were
played and prizes awarded, lunch was
served.
Rev. Bob Matheson led the worship
service on Tuesday afternoon. Mrs.
Marjorie Johns played the piano. -
Our baking club met Wednesday
afternoon. Besides baking some
squares they also prepared some
rhubarb.
Our ceramic club met on Wednes-
day morning. Lil Baker and'Erlene
Stewart were there to give us some
assistance.
Thursday evening was a double
feature movie night. The first movie
was entitled "Cesai's Bark Canoe".
Cesai, a 67 -year-old Cree Indian,
demonstrated the art of making bark
canoes. The second movie, "Stratford
Adventure", gave us insight into the
establishment of the... Festival
Theatre. We had a glimpse of the pro-
duction of the first play at Stratford,
which was Richard III.
Friday was games day here at
Queensway. Mrs. Vergie Williams
and Lloyd McDougall won the bean
big toss. Mrs. Williams scored 80
points. Mr. McDougall scored 210
points. The crokinole champions were
Seniors hold zone rally
The 10th spring rally of zone 8
United Senior Citizens of Ontario was
held in Clinton town hall with 118
members present. President Mrs.
Irene Davis, Hensall called the
meeting to order.
One minute silence was observed in
memory of departed members. Devo-
tions were by Rev. Norman Pick of
Wesley Willis Church. Mayor Chester
Archibald welcomed everyone.
Reports were given by secretaries
of each club in the zone relating to
their year's work. Many good ideas
were given by the clubs. An executive
meeting was held in the noon hour
Ade a delightful lunch was served by
the Clinton Club members. A sing
song was held following lunch and
guest speaker for the day, Mrs.
Lavina Hamilton of Bloomfield was
introduced by Barry Gandier of
Zurich. She gave a very inspiring
message on aging, stating that old age
is a -habit we just haven't got time for.
She reported the convention will be
held in Kingston Aug 13 and 14.
She referred our clubs to a car. She
said "A president is chosen, but the
secretary is the ignition, the assistant
secretary is the booster battery, the
treasurer is the carburator and the
members are the nuts and bolts that
keep it all together."
Our theme this year is, "We all
have to share." We should keep our
hearts young, work together, keep
healthy - and happy. Mrs. Muriel
Jones presented Mrs. Hamilton with
a gift and many thanks.
All officers remained in 'office
another year except the secretary,
Irene Johns who resigned. Assistant
secretary, Mildred Thomson, Exeter
was installed as secretary and Alice
Bowen, Exeter as assistant. Irene
received a gift from the president as
well as the zone for her excellent ser-
vice as secretary for eight years.
A programme of musical numbers
and readings was much enjoyed. Per-
cy Blundell, past president, gave
courtesy remarks and Irene Davis
read a prayer she had composed for
the zone which can be used in clubs
if members wish.
There are 38,00(► miles to the noon
and all seniors are asked to walk as
many miles as possible during the
week of Ndx 25 to June 2. Report all
mileage to club secretaries and the
total will be sent to USCG head-
quarters. If the mileage reaches the
238,000 miles the record will be put in
the Guinness Book of Records. so all
seniors get out and walk, walk. walk.
Fall rally will be hosted by Stan-lA'e
Club.
Grace Dinney and Neil Regan. Mrs.
Stephanie Bosse won the card bingo
game.
