That means the H-2000 home built by Gregus Con- struction at 31:3Pryde Boulevard will cost only $240 a year to heat. The most noticeable due inside the house are the very Targe window sills They are caused by the unusual thickness of the walls. The watts in- sulation is rated at 11-37, instead of the H-20 insulation in most homes. The ceilings are H-45, instead of the usual 11-28. Even the basement is H-20 and insulated right to the floor: some basements are barely insulated at all. Gregus was helped w this project by the Federal Ministry of Energy. Mines and Resources. So far, most homes of this type have then built-in Western Canada.. The program started about five years ago, accor- ding to Jim Gregus. The house uses baseboard heating. and an air ventilation system. The ventilation system gets rid of pollutants. and maintains good air quality, but without losing very much heat. It warms the fresh air using the heat from the old air, with about a 70 per ct'nt efficiency rate. There are 1 IT LOOKS LIKE AN ORDINARY HOME from the outside, but the R-2000 home from Gregus Con- struction is special. Because of all the extra insulation built into it, it will cost only about $240 to heat each year. Jim Gregus is in front of the energy efficient home. This is considered the op- timum number. Compare this to about eight air changes per hour in a poorly insulated house. "This house was actually built to a higher standard than the IL -2000 pro- gram calls for," Gregus said. Gregus took a course from the Ministry to learn how to build these homes, and will be taking occasional refresher courses as well. Gregus Construction received a $5,000 grant towards the cost of building the home. The house will be monitored over the next two years, 10 make sure there is no heat loss. It is wrapped in a polyethylene vapour barrier to seal it, and all laps were covered with acoustical caulking. Gregus figures over the first seven years of owning the home, the extra cost for the insulationwouldtberepaid in heat savings. After that, the cost would be lower than for a regular home. Ile's particularly interested in seeing how well this home works out, because except for the special features, it's identical to his own. 313 Pryde Boulevard has already been purchased. by Mr. and Mrs. Bob Elgie, who presently live down the street. The super energy efficient home is open to the public this week, from Wednesday to Monday, from.noon to 5 p.m. It may also be viewed by ap- pointment with Gregus Construction. AIR VENTILATION Jim Gregus is pictured here in front of the ven- tilation system that is one of the special features of the R-2000 home. The system, combined with the extra insulation in the home, means that there are only 1' 2 air changes every hour. The home is on Pryde Boulevard in Exeter.
