Gymnasts in
action today
Months and months of practice will
come to a climax for gymnasts at the
local high school today (Wednesday
when the Panthers host the Huron
Perth gymnastics meet.
Thirteen gymnasts have • been
preparing to defend the Huron Perth
title since early November and have
now increased workouts from three to
five days a week in final preparation.
Only one other school, Norwell, will
send a team to the Huron Perth meet
and the winner of the two team meet
will go into the record books as the
last Huron Perth gymnastics champs.
1985 will be the last year for com-
petitive gymnastics following a very
obvious decline in the sport over the
last five years.
Lack of interest from both coaches
and students, coupled with the growth
of gymnastics clubs, has led to a
decline in the number of schools
entering competitions.
Young aspiring gymnasts no longer
await high school years to compete in
the sport. Clubs take in the athletes,
leaving school gymnastics teams
short of participants.
The local girls are disappointed by
the news of ending gymnastics at the
Huron Perth and WOSSA level but are
intent on reclaiming both titles for the
fifth straight year.
- Members of the junior team in-
clude: Laurie Forrester, Karen Hoff-
man, Patty O'Toole, Karen Mehagan
and Lisa Birmingham. Making up the
intermediate squad are Carol Mor-
rissey, Mary Martens, Kim
Boogemans, Barb Lawson, and
Ronalyn Bell, who will probably not
compete due to injuries.
Competing En the senior category
are Jacqui Cottreel, Lee O'Rourke,
and Rose Morrissey. All three girls
automatically qualify for WOSSA due
to the fact that Norwell of Palmerston
has no senior gymnasts.
Spectators are welcome to attend
the Huron Perth meet at the local
school today. Competition begins at
5:30 and will run until 9:30 in the large
gym.
Red Cross First Aid - six hour

Great year for
girls volleyball
South Huron's junior girls'
volleyball team put a cap on an ex-
cellent season, Saturday, finishing
seventh at WOSSA.
South Huron faced teams from In-
gersoll, Sarnia Northern, Arthur
Voaden and Banting in preliminary
play. The Panthers split games with
Aurthur Voaden by scores of 15-12 and
13-1
Th5.e locals also split with Banting,
winning by a score of 16-14 after drop-
ping the first game 12-15. The Pan-
thers did not fare as well with Inger-
soll and Sarnia Northern, losing both
games.
The local girls played very well and
kept each game very close. The Pan-
thers never lost by more than a three-
point spread.
The only difficulty the locals had
was slow starts. South Huron allow-
ed their opponent to take the lead ear-
ly m the game and found it difficult
to come hack:
The junior spikers were somewhat
disappointed with their showing at
WOSSA but found consolation looking
back over the excellent season they
enjoyed and playing exceptional
volleyball at WOSSA.
