The Ausable league is being expanded with the addition of Registration Saturday for minor baseball, soccer, softball Not only is the weather letting us know spring is coming, but, a number of summer activites are getting ready to swing into action. This Saturday is registration day for the Exeter Minor Baseball Association and the Exeter Centennials Minor Soccer Association. Boys and girls will be able to sign up for one or both of these popular summer sports between the hours of 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. For any of the youngsters unable to attend the initial registra- tion a second session is scheduled for Saturday, April 13. Dwayne Tinney is in his second year as president of the minor ball group. He tells us he has tentatively lined up coaches for teams in five age categories. They are for T -ball for the seven and eight year olds followed by tyke, pee wee, bantam and midget. Jim DeBlock is in charge of the T -ball youngsters and hopes to arrange some exhibition games against area teams including Grand Bend. In addition to president Tinney, the minor ball executive in- cludes secretary -treasurer Wendi Schwindt and directors Jim, Versa and Lorna Russell. The Exeter and district minor soccer program is continuing to grow according to president Martin DeBruyn. Also in his second year as head of minor soccer DeBruyn is pleased to report the ad- dition of 'a bantam aged team. The bantams will be playing in a London and district houseleague. Others not of city teams are from Lucan, St. Thomas and Wallacetown. teams frpm St. Marys and Goderich. The local soccer group will also be involved in organizing and operating three tournaments during this year's Lake Huron Sum- merfest. The soccer association executive includes along with president Martin DeBruyn, secretary Linda Sanders and treasurer Susan Brintnell. The joint registrations this Saturday and ip two weeks is aim- ed at allowing youngsters to sign up for both sports. A number have been doing ;his in the past. .... ....... ... ..... • Sports Spotlight by Ross Haugh We would urge as many as possible to get out Saturday to sign up and let officials know how busy their summer will be. Rec ball, too While talking about summer activities we will mention a note from Mike Soldan telling us about the upcoming season of the Ex- eter and district rec ball league, Soldan is handing over the presidential reins to Mark Cronyn. • It appears as if an even dozen teams will be participating in this very popular league. Three teams, the Exeter Bkie Crew, Hensall Legionaires and Nom\\\ \ \ .:\\ Tykes win medal in Clinton Sunday afternoon in Clinton the Ex- eter tykes ground out a medal in the B division to win that championship. Brent Urlin scored first for Exeter, then goals by Jeff Sararas and Gavin Poole made it 3-0. Sararas scored again for a 4-0 lead before Blyth's Robbie Johnstone scored to cut Exeter's lead to 4-1. Brian Richardson iced the cake when he scored with only three minutes left to give Exeter the 5-1 win. St. Marys over the Tykes Wednesday, the St. Marys tykes came to town and won their first game against Exeter by a 6-1 deci- sion. Scott Inson was the lone Exeter scorer. St. Marys outskated the locals in most of the game. St. Marys has the unique situation of having 56 tykes in their organization. These players are divided into four equal teams and have hosted'Exeter on three occasions where the locals have been winners. This particular team were some of the stronger tykes and an amicable coach Bill McCarthy brought them to Challenge the locals which they did. , The busy little Exeter tykes who have played nine games in 14 days travel to St. Marys Saturday, for their last play of the season. Another medal for Tykes The Exeter tykes started Friday evening in the Clinton houseleague tournament and dropped a close 3-2 decision to Clinton. Scott Inson and Brent Urlin scored for Exeter and after two periods the tie stood. Clinton scored early in the third and though Exeter tykes had many more opportunities than Clinton, they could not get the equalizer. Saturday afternoon the tykes were a horse of a different colour as -they donned their black uniforms and hammered out an 8-0 victory over rival Zurich. Joe Bierling opehed the scoring at 11:55 of the first then Ryan Soldan scored from Bill Parker to make to 2-0, Adam Hern scored unassisted. Then the locals broke loose we. Swat leads -darts The 4 -W's were the only team to sweep five points in Friday's regular action in the Exeter Legion mixed dart league. With three weeks remaining in the schedule, Irene Jackson leads the ladies with a high score of 164, Ber- nice Simpson has the high takeout of 83 and Betty Bowerman has the most games al 28. In the men's statistics, Phil Leger has accumulated the high score of 174. Wayne Parkinson's 101 is the high takeout and Joe Bailey has won the most games with 40. For spare darters. the female leaders are most games Dorothy Reynolds 17. high score Thea Rothbauer 140 and high takeout Kate Bierling 58. For the men Duff Rothbauer has won 27 games. Kevin Nixon has high takeout at 78 and Rothbauer and Nix- on are tied for high score with 140. Swat leach the league with 93 points. The battle for the next seven positions is very close. All in the Family ' is second with 78 points followed by the A -Team and Scotties at 77, Itchy Niters and Trailers at 75, Turtles 75 and Snyde and Clyde 72. The Zurich youngsters had defeated Exeter 5-2 in the Exeter tournament previously. Adam Hern was praised for his excellent work on the Exeter blueline. Bantam season ends in tourney The seasop ended on a losing note for the Exeter bantam houseleague team on the weekend at the league's final tournament held at Clinton and Blyth. After beating Lucan 4-1 to ad- vance to the championshin. semifinals, they lost 6-2 to Hensall. The Exeter team completely dominated the first game and it was only the great work of Allen Rollings in goal for Lucan that kept the score from reaching double figures. Scott l%redlake and Jason McFalls scored in the first period, with assists going to Rob McKnight. Frank Mattucci, Jeff Rowe and Tom Rolph. Troy Edginton scored in the second period for Lucan. with Greg Hayter and Bob Aldridge getting assists. I Ienri DeBruyn scored two goals in the third period with David Josephson getting assists on both and single assists going to Graham Arthur and Mike Conlan. The game against Hensall was a clean, fast. hard-fought garfie, with plenty of scoring chances at both ends. Rob Volland opened the scoring for I lensaII at the 49 second mark of the first period. but Jason McFalls tied the score minutes later, Jeff Rowe assisting. Rob Taylor and Jason (manse each scored two goals for Iiensall. with Jim Dickens picking up one goal. Henri DeBruyn scored Ex- eter's second goal, with David Josephson picking up the only assist. The team had an excellent .record during the year. losing only four league games. With only three second year players on the team. the boys can be proud of what they accomplished. Phone 234-6265 Usborne township are starting their 12th consecutive season. League officials hope the Hearn-Walloy team from Lucan will return to action after an absence of one year. Good hockey continues The only hockey team in the area still in contention for a cham- pionship title continues to come from behind and area fans are in for at least two more exciting games. The Exeter Mohawks battled back to eliminate Teeswater and engaged with the Woodford Royals for the Western Ontario Athletic Association Intermediate "A" grand championship. As against Teeswater, the Mohawks are one game down hav- ing lost the first game Sunday in Owen Sound by the very narrowest of margins 4-3. The Mohawks in their traditional style of coming back scored two goals in the last eight minutes of the third period to come within one score of a tie. The home games in the series against Woodford are tonight, Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. and Sunday night with a 7:30 starting time. The Mohawks lost the flip of the coin so Woodford gets the extra home game. The third game is in Owen Sound Friday night with a fifth at the same place April 2. If a sixth is necessary it will go at the South Huron Rec Centre on Friday, April 5 at 8:30 p.m. A seventh would go in Owen Sound April 7. Cowgirls continue The Crediton Cowgirls ladies fastball team are holding their first try -out tonight, Wednesday at the Huron Park recreation hall at 7:30 p.mr Any girls wishing to try out will be more than welcome.
