Weeds. continue as
threats to top crops
Depite great advances in chemical
control, weeds remain as one of the
greatest threats to maximum crop
productivety.
Certain weeds are resistant to
selective chemical control in a given
crop. The unwanted species can pro-
liferate once the majority of weeds
have been eliminated from the crop.
It is important for farmers to institute
measures that will minimize build-up
of the 'hard -lo -kill' species. Certified
seed is one of the hest weapons
available for winning the 'war on
weeds.'
When you 'plant Certified', you get
all the benefits provided by Canada's •
Seed pedigreeing system. The seed
will be true to its named variety and
therefore will provide all the key
characteristics such as yield, stan-
dability and disease resistance - for
which that particular cultivator has
been bred. However, the mechanical
purity requirements of the Canada
Seeds Act may represent the greatest
benefit to be derived from Certified
seed.
Because of the stringent nature of
these standards, pedigreed seed
growers take great pains to ensure
that weeds don't get a foothold in their
crops. Chemical weed control is an
important first step in this process.
However, pedigreed producers keep
a watchful eye on their seed crops
throughout the growing season, and
rogue out any off types of weeds as
they appear.
Drills, combines and trucks are
notorious Tor spreading weed seeds.
'Consequently, pedigreed seed
growers clean this equipment
thoroughly between each field and
each operaton.
Separate storage of seed crops in
scrupulously cleaned bins minimizes
the chances of contamination. It is ob-
viously in the grower's best interest
to take all of the steps - from seeding
through to final cleaning - that are so
necessary to ensure mechanical puri-
ty of a seed lot.

under our national pedigreeing
system.
Seed drill surveys reveal that many
weeds are being planted every year
along with 'bin run' or 'over -the -
fence' seed. Your chances of winning
the 'war on weeds' are greatly im-
proved when you join forces with Cer-
tified Seed.
Reap the benefits of ag. research
investment
Investment in research has helped
keep Canada's agriculture in the
forefront of technological develop-
ment. in particular our plant
breeders are recognized worldwide
for their contribution towards im-
provements of crop yields. disease
resistance and quality.
The canola story provides a classic
example. By the time that erucic acid
started making the headlines as a
potential hazard in rapeseed oil.
Agriculture Canada plant breeders
had a 'low erucic' variety available
for farmers. Next• minimization of
gluscosinolates meant that meal is
more suitable for livestock rations.
The new 'double zero' rapeseed
varieties were called canola to
designate the unique properties of
their oil and meal Credit goes to the
agricultural schientists at Saskatoon
and Winnipeg who so rapidly provid-
ed Prairie growers with world -
leading canol varieties.
Wheat -Canada's number one crop
- has also benefitted greatly from the
painstaking work of plant breeders
Varieties are available to match dif-
ferent growing conditions and market
requirements, and to ensure
resistance against potentially
devastating diseases.
The soybean crop has moved out of
its traditional three -county corner of
extreme southwestern Ontario 10
cover all of the province's south. in-
terest in the crop is strong in many
other parts of the country. Alt of this
has taken place in less than a decade,
and is strictly the result of both public
and private plant breeders develop-
ing high yftilding, early varieties.
in most of our major crop species,
improved varieties are coming onto
the scene at a more rapid pace than
ever. Growers must look to the new
entries for greater productivity and
improved profit potential.
Of course, the top new varieties are
only available as Certified Seed the
advantages that these varieties pro-
vide far out -weigh any additional cost
of seed. Naturally. you also get all the
benefits and assurance that come
with every lot of blue lagged. Cer-
tified Seed
Variety select on is the most impor-
tant produclon decision you have to
make. Choosing Certified Seed of the
best new varieties increases the pro-
fit potential of your cropping pro-
gram. It's nice to know that you'll be
receiving the benefit of Canadian
agricultural research at the same
time!
Minimal nuisance weeds such as
wild oats or stinkweed.
No prohibited weeds like cleavers
in rapeseed or field bindweed in
wheat.
Optimum kernel size proven to in-
crease seeding vigor and final
yield.
Low disease levels to tet a healthy
crop achieve maximum yields.
Minimum contamination from
other crops or varieties such as wheat
in barley or Chester wheat in
Neepawa seed.
A harvest edge:
Canadian plant breeders are
among the best in the world. Proven,
tested varieties can greatly increase
yield, quality and disease resistance.
But no seed can be sold as true -to -
variety unless it is pedigreed.
Certified seed is the way to ensure
you are getting all the advantages
developed in a particular variety.
This painstaking care assures you
that certified seed will produce a
clean, even crop that will gain the
best advantage from available fertili-
ty and growing conditions.
Improve your odds. Grow bigger,
better crops with a known variety.
Plant certified seed, your harvest
edge.

What does certified seed offer you?
High germination to ensure even
emergence and good stands
•
Certified seed: a sure bet!
Certified seed is grown only by
pedigreed seed growers. To be labell-
ed certified, the seed must meet or ex-
ceed stiff government standards.
Representative samples from each
field grown for certified seed are sub-
mitted to labs operated by
Agriculture Canada. Only after all
results are positive can the seed by
sold as certified.
Certified seed can be purchased in
bulk or hags from any authorized
seed dealer. Simply book your order
early and pick it up at planting time.

Seeding methods
Seeding methods and rates have a
big impact on the eventual yield of
any crop. Some researchers have
calculated that as mush as two-thirds
of final produc'ion is established on
seeding day!
The ideal combination of soil
moisture. temperature and tilth is
recognized by good farmers
everywhere, and mos( take great
pains to ensure that their land is
ready prior to seeding. Rate of
seeding - in bushels or kernels per
acre - varies from crop to crop, but
research and practical experience
have pinpointed best rates for dif-
ferent species and varieties.
But yvhal are you planting'' With

and seeding equipment with the ex-
tra effort put into preparing the land
