Stop -off point for 10,000 big birds
Museuni will help visitors enjoy swam migration
With the return of spring, it is time
once again for ht dredsiltspecies of
birds to begin their annual migration
northward. One of the earliest birds
to arrive are thousands of magnifi-
cient white tundra swans. which land
on a 1400 hectare site of flooded land
adjacent to the Lambton Heritage
Museum and the Pinery Provincial
Park.
This year, both sites are again co-
operating to host the 'Return of the
Swans', on Sundays March 24 and 31
from 1 to 3 p.tn.
Depending on weather conditions.
up to 10,000 tundra swans land near
the Heritage Museum as I stop off on
their mass migration from the State
of Delawareto the high Canadian Arc-
tic. In addition, over 15,000 Canada
Geese and up to 20,000 varied species
of ducks also stop on this favoured
site.
Those wishing to attend the swan
viewing days should make their first
stop the Lambton Heritage Museum
on Ilwy. 21, five miles south of Grand
Bend. A film about the swans will be
shown and refreshments will be
available.
Pinery Park staff and volunteers
will then direct the visitors to the
viewing site where telescopes will be
set up and naturalists will be
available to help with identification of
the waterfowl.
Being your binoculars and be a part
of one of the greatest wonders of
natural history, right here in Lamh-
ton County!

Mary's Musings
One of the drawbacks of having a
baby is the paper work. No, I'm not
talking about the Pampers -- that's
paper that has to be attended to.fre-
quently. i You know, people told us
that when we had a baby everything
would-be changing -- they didn't know
how right they were 1.
Actually, Pampers are one kind of
paper work 1 don't mind. Before
Chelsey was • born, my mother
presented me with a nice selection of
cloth diapers. Well. it didn't take
much for me to convince myself that
even at $11 a box, Pampers were
cheaper than the wear and tear on my
washer and dryer, not to mention the
1 cost of electricity, detergent and pum-
ping out the septic tank. The cloth
diapers have proven to be quite useful
in wiping up moist burps.
Now. back to the paper work that
I don't like much. Ilaving a baby
necessitates the filling out of so many
forms that the paper work is almost
as difficult as the delivery.
It all starts before the baby is born.
You need to fill out numerous -forms
in order to get maternity leave
money. The government provides us
with a portion of our salary for 17
weeks when we have a baby. But
before we start feeling loo grateful we
should remember that employees and
employer's have been donating to the
fund so that the money is available.

By Mary Alderson
The paper work problems began
when I thought that becausp I work-
ed in Exeter, I could take the forms
'into the Exeter Employment office. I
learned that as a resident of Lambton,
the forms had to go to Sarnia.
The forms are confusing because
the government doesn't provide
forms for those on maternity leave --
they must apply for benefits as if they
were unemployed. ()ne would think
that with the governrnent's penchant
for special forms to fill out, they
would have a specific form for mater-
nity leave benefits.
To make matters more confusing.
the government sends out forms
every two weeks to see if you are still
unemployed or if you have been look-
ing for work. It seems to me that the
vast majority of women would be tak-
ing the 17 weeks they are allowed for
maternity leave and the government
could actually cut the paper work and
postage costs if they came up with a
form that lasted for the entire 17 week
period. Also, this must be the only
place where you are penalized for fill-
ing out a form and returning it too
promptly. I made the mistake of
returning the form before the two
week period was up 1I knew that I
was not going to be working, nor was
I looking for work in that time period 1
but the "Employment" office mailed
the form hack to me, so that I could
turn around and mail it back to them
-- and thanks to the postal service --
the form was now late.
Before you figure out the materni-
ty leave plan, bills start coming in
from the hospital, and forms for the
insurance company have to he filled
out.
Then, of course, there are the birth
registration forms. You till those out
and mail them in and you receive a
little card that looks suspiciously like
a birth certificate, and you might, be
fooled, except it says "This is not a
birth certificate". So to get a birth
certificate you fill out yet another
form and this time, enclose $5. The
birth certificate arrives, looking very
much like the first card. Birth cer-
tificates are no longer neat little
plastic cards like those of my genera -
lion -- they are hits of paper that say
they will be void if laminated. It
would be interesting to know why.
Then. just when you have writer's
cramp, you have to fill out another
form in order to get family allowance
money. And you thought the money
just rolled in automatically.L -.
