Ice Kings active at 'curling every Friday afternoon
The Exeter curling club facility has been in business now for
25 years and on two occasions in recent weeks this fact has been
brought to the fore.
On February 8, an anniversary party including some grudge
curling matches were held. A large number of the charter
members were back including fellows like Les Parker, Dick
Itoloefson and Dick Jermyn who live out of the area.
Friday, the Ice Kings bonspiel attracted 32 enthusiastic senior
curlers.
At that time men's curling club president Gerry Smith
presented an honorary membership to Carf Cann. This honour is
richly deserved as Carf was one of the driving forces behind for-
mation of the local club.
This is only the second honorary membership to be handed out.
The other belongs to another veteran of the old Scottish game,
Harry Mathers.
Harry with his invention of the Ice King machine is responsi-
ble for excellent curling surfaces not .only in Exeter, but,
throughout the world.
We were pleased to be able to attend Friday's bonspiel. Some
of the senior curlers may have lest a step in sweeping ability, but,
they sure make up for it with enthusiasm and plenty of.know-how.
Marshall Dearing was in charge of the Friday outing in
absence of Art Cann who was hospitalized and continued his usual
excellent organizational skills.
The Ice Kings group now in existence for two years is giving
the opportunity to those who still would like to curl on a lesser com-
petitive scale. They are in action every Friday afternoon.
It's great to see a number of participants from Grand Cove
Estates at Grand Bend making the weekly trek to the curling club.
Their efforts are greatly appreciated.
We did learn one thing at Friday's bonspiel. Two games in one
day are more than enough for the Ice Kings.
After the two regular games, rinks skipped by Bill MacLean
and Jack Gaiser were tied for first place and organizers ordered
an extra full end to decide a winner.
It's hard to tell whether MacLean, a local painter and Gaiser,
Sports Spotlight

the chicken farmer from Dashwood were tired out or just willing
to let the other rink win.
What was to bea sudden -death end ended with an empty house.
In a second try Gaiser's rink proved to have the most stamina and
took home top prize.
Big game tonight
The Exeter Mohawks will be skating on to the South Huron Rec
Centre ice tonight. Wednesday for their most important game of
the season.
The Mohawks who went through the regular schedule flying
are forced to come from behind for the second time in the playoffs.
They overcame a deficit in Teeswater Sunday afternoon to beat
the Falcons 6-4 thanks to a short-handed goal by Mark C'ronyn to
force tonight's seventh and deciding game.
These two clubs have been dishing out an exciting brand of
hockey in the first six games and tonight's should be no exception.
A tough decision
The toughest decision that Toronto Blue Jays managed Bob-
by Cox has even been called on to make will occur in a couple of
weeks.
Cox will have to cut his major league roster to25 active players
before the schedule opens in Kansas City on April 8.
The team is off to a great start with nine straight exhibition
victories and all of the 40 roster players and nine on the non -roster
have contributed to the club's early success. •
The Jays have run out of options on infielders Kelly Gruber
.and Manny Lee and will lose them if they are not kept in the
majors.
Wes have made our selection of 25 players to keep and will check
later to how close we are to the final decision.
We are going with only nine pitchers. They are Stieb, Clancy.
Leal, Alexander, Key, Caudill, Lavelle, Jackson- and Henke to
throw to catchers Whitt and Martinez.
The infielders in addition to Gruber and Lee will be Upshaw,
Garcia, Fernandez, Mullinicks. Outfielders are Moseby, Bell, Bar-
field, Shepherd and Webster.
As designated hitters and fill-ins at other spots we would choose
Aikens, Burroughs and Leach.
We have had to delete Dennis Lamp, Bryan Clark, Stan Clarke,
Garth Iorg, Fred Maurique, Jim Acker and Fred McGriff who has
been doing well at the plate.

ville and John Rutter were the other
goal scorers.

dine and Bryan Denomme. Stephen
took a three goal lead before Zurich
responded, and then outscored Zurich
4-1 in the third to record the win.

scored two goals with singles to Bill
Parker, Jeff Sararas, Brian Richard-
son and Bryce Hann.
In game two Tuesday the tykes
found themselves in the dark several
times as the storm caused power
shortages at the arena.
In that game Scott Inson scored a
hat trick for Exeter with Jeff Sararas,
Joe Bierling, Ryan Soldan, Robbie
Lynn, Bill Parker, Brent Urlin and
Adam Hern picking up singles.
Jason Lindenfield recorded the two
shut outs in the Exeter net.
Thursday evening the tournament
continued with Stephen defeating
Hensall by a 4-0 score. Matt Glavin
opened the scoring followed by Dar-
ryl Parsons, Jeff Glavin and Crai
was a great ending and all three
teams deserved their medals behind
Step:ien's gold.
Brock Williams -was named m.v.p.
for Hensall with two goals and two
assists. This was his second award in
the tourney. Jason Lindenfield was
m.v.p. in game two, Friday, having
played brilliantly in the Exeter net.
Saturday Matinee Goes to Tykes
The Exeter tykes hosted St. Marys
Saturday afternoon for an exhibition
match. Scott Inson put the locals on
the board at the 16:40 mark of the first
period and scgried his second goal at
7:20 of the second.
Three minutes later Ryan Soldan

scored. Jason Lindenfield kept Hen-
sall off the scoreboard and game two
went to Exeter. Cara Gardener was
m.v.p. and in game one Jeff Glavin
was selected m.v.p.

player went to Brock Weiss of Hensall
who was the unanimous nick as a
hard working upcoming player.
The Exeter squad's luck in St.
Marys seemed to have rubbed off as
they lost 5-2 to the Zurich squad.
Zurich took a quick 3-0 lead as Bryan
Denomme scored a hat trick.
Scott Inson scored for Exeter to
make it 3-1 then Denomme scored his
fourth to make it 4-1. Adam Hern
scored for Exeter to make it 4-2 and
Denomme replied again and the score
remained 5-2. Adam Hern was the
game's m.v.p. with a solid
performance.
Every cloud has a silver lining and
it turned out to be true for three of the
four teams in the tournament.
In an exciting finish, Hensall upset
Zurich 4-1 on two goals by Mark Bell,
two by Brock Weiss and one by Kevin
Hoogenas. Zurich scored on an effort
from Jason Becker.
This left Zurich, Ilensall and Exeter°
tied in the tournament. The Exeter
lads took to the ice against Stephen in
the final and a win or tie would have
given them a silver medal. However,
Stephen managed a 2-0 victory on
goals by Mike Bowerman and Craig
Glavin. This left all three teams tied
for second with Stephen in first place.
The result was silver medals to all
three teams and gold for Stephen. 11
